Job Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY

Scholastic's Digital Education Engineering teams build and maintain learning applications and other supporting technologies that help kids progress through their journey to becoming proficient, independent readers. From highly game-oriented phonics to on-line independent digital reading, millions of students use Scholastic's digital literacy products. Our technologies also support integrations with school and district systems, gather and aggregate data on student performance to enhance teacher and administrative decision-making, and configure an increasingly rich suite of capabilities. We are looking for a principal level engineer to oversee 2-3 agile development teams to deliver key aspects of the Scholastic Education experience. This individual will work closely with other principal and director level engineers to define the future state architecture for Scholastic's product offering. This role will also provide mentorship to junior and senior engineers from a technical and professional perspective.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Execute technology initiatives to support Scholastic Digital Education Literacy initiatives
  • Provide technical leadership with a focus on engineering and agile best practices
  • Develop a deep understanding of both the current and future state line-of-business needs and how those relate to technology by working closely with our business leaders as well as our technology organization.
  • Own the solutions architecture, both in its current state and the changes to drive it forward in line with future business and technology strategy.
  • Work with other Engineering Leads to develop and improve overall architecture for Digital Education Engineering
  • Mentor software engineers in their career development
  • Become the leading expert on the technologies that drive the business and how they are used (processes, workflows, integrations, etc.)
  • Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to build new features and products by analyzing project requirements and accordingly provide technical and functional recommendations.
  • Maintain high quality standards

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years Expertise in modern web application development with a focus on service based architectures.
  • 10+ years practical experience in software engineering and application architecture.
  • 5+ years Java API development, preferably on the Spring stack (Spring Boot, Spring Web, Spring Data, etc.)
  • 10+ relational DB experience. NoSQL DBs such as Mongo a plus.
  • Experience with messaging technologies such as JMS and streaming/event technologies such as Kafka or Amazon Kinesis a plus.
  • Experience leading agile engineering teams including a mix of onshore and offshore resources.
  • 3+ years cloud technology
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Ability to establish goals and set clear expectations, prioritize activities, and follow through to completion.
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability with a commitment to delivering high quality software that balances technical and business goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate with a variety of audiences at all levels.
  • Experience building educational software for the k-12 school market
