Summary

The CHOP Foundation is hiring an Associate Vice President of Individual Giving to lead and manage the overall operations of the units within individual giving such as Major Gifts, Annual Gifts and Planned Giving. This position manages and solicits a portfolio of principal gifts donors ($5M+), often in partnership with the Hospital’s executive leadership, physicians, and volunteers. This position is responsible for raising (directly and indirectly) 70% of the annual Foundation goal of over $120 million annually.

As the Associate Vice President for development and philanthropy in individual giving you will coach and manage a highly energized, enthusiastic, and professional staff who are committed to creating and implementing best-practice engagement and giving strategies and programs. Under your leadership, you will continue to grow the team to approximately 60 staff members (growth plan through 2027) with the expectation to achieve $165m annual fundraising outcomes by 2027, expanding into new territories regionally and nationally.

Reporting Structure: The Associate Vice President, Individual Giving reports to the Vice President of Development. You will also work closely with Hospital leadership, including the CEO, Department Chairs, and Chief Scientific Officer, to determine and execute fundraising priorities and strategies for the Hospital.
Schedule: Hybrid with 1-2 days onsite and rest will be remote. You are required to be located within a commutable distance to our Philadelphia Campus.

What you will be doing?
  • Determine, execute, and report on fundraising priorities and strategies for the Hospital, together with Hospital leadership, including the CEO, EVP and Chief Development Officer, Department Chairs, and Chief Scientific Officer.
  • Develop a comprehensive and measurable strategy for developing donors and creating an integrated culture of philanthropy across the Hospital and with its constituencies. Build relationships with Hospital leadership, including executive leadership, department chairs, and division chiefs, to engage in fundraising efforts.
  • Support Foundation Board of Overseers fundraising strategy and meeting planning together with executive director, board and volunteer relations, and executive vice president/chief development officer.
  • Lead and manage the overall operations of the units reporting to this position, including major gifts, regional development, annual giving, planned to give, concierge services and administrative services. Design, implement, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish goals and objectives, and maximize collaboration across units. Manage budgets totaling over $3.5 million. Develop and implement planning and goal setting and create fundraising strategies. Champion staff development and retention, creating career development plans for staff.
  • Work closely with chief development officer and a senior team in setting direction for the office and promoting team efforts. As a senior leader in the department, actively participate in and contribute to weekly senior team meetings and other department-wide meetings/retreats. Exercise understanding of the full department and provide suggestions and recommendations for all department lines of business including development, operations, services and institutional fundraising.
  • Actively manage, cultivate, and solicit a qualified portfolio of principal gift donors ($5+ million), often in partnership with the chief executive officer, chief development officer, physicians, and volunteers.
  • Serves as active department spokesperson at key meetings and events and serves as one of the public faces of the Foundation office.
  • This position serves as the Senior Associate liaison for the Woodmark Group, a cohort of the top 26 children’s hospitals in North America.
  • A full commitment to the success of the mission and high standards of achievement are expected in this position.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in philanthropy, marketing, communications and non-profit management
  • Experience working in a complex healthcare organization preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of directing and managing successful fundraising programs
  • Significant experience and success personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts of $5 million and above

  • Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Results oriented with the ability to work in a timely manner with multiple deadlines and competing requirements. A self-starter and quick study with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, a strong work ethic, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a dynamic and, at times, ambiguous environment.
