Collins Aerospace is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the Secondary Distribution design team in Rockford, Illinois. This position will work collaboratively with our team and others to design, develop and maintain high-quality, reliable, and safe avionics equipment.As a mechanical engineer in our department, you will be responsible for working with other hardware and systems engineers to support new and existing products. This role will include regularly troubleshooting complex problems, developing solutions, and communicating outcomes while working with electronics packaging, and Dynamic and Stress engineers. The candidate would ideally be familiar with aerospace design processes, and procedures such as DO-160.  This position requires a commitment to professional working hours that extend beyond a typical 40-hour workweek

This is a Hybrid position.  Candidate must be a commutable distance from Rockford, IL to work a hybrid schedule reporting on-site as needed

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Investigation of production issues, including developing and implementing solutions
  • Collaboration with product development teams to meet the program cost and schedule targets
  • Work independently to solve moderately complex technical challenges
  • Support thermal and/or vibration testing of products to ensure survivability or for product improvement
  • Support in-service avionics hardware failure investigations
  • Facilitate build of prototype assemblies for testing
  • Individual job duties may vary

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations. OR
  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience OR
  • In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and an understanding of engineering principles
  • Experience with 3D parametric modeling in CAD tools such (e.g. NX, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Understanding of thermodynamics & heat transfer and its application in electronics cooling
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods & limitations (i.e. sheet metal fabrication, machining, casting, plastic molding, etc.)
