Location Requirements:


While this team is a mix of on-site, remote, and hybrid employees, this position is required to be on-site in San Jose, CA during all scheduled work. This requirement is due to the nature of the role demanding leadership, cross-functional interface ownership with other vehicle systems, and the need to be the main point of contact during testing phases (normal working business hours). 


About The Team:
As a member of the mechanical systems team, you will be responsible for supporting or leading the development of one or multiple of the actuated mechanisms on the aircraft. Team responsibilities include the propeller tilt mechanism, the variable pitch mechanism, and the flight controls surface mechanisms (flaperons and ruddervators). This is a small and dynamic team. An ideal candidate is motivated by ownership and uncertainty.


Minimum Requirements*: 


1. A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace engineering (or related) and at least 7 years of directly applicable experience. Graduate degrees may account for post Bachelor’s experience.   


2. Strong experience with and the ability to mentor junior engineers in at least 4 of the following:



  1. GD&T for mechanical systems. 

  2. Design for 14 CFR Part 23, AMDT 64 compliance.

  3. Test plan, procedure, and report development/documentation in order to verify system compliance with requirements. 

  4. Structural analysis utilizing hand calculations and finite element methods. 

  5. Materials selection inclusive of alloys, heat treatments, allowables, and surface treatments. 

  6. Siemens NX CAD and Simcenter FEA tools.

  7. Roller element bearing selection and sizing.

  8. Involute gear tooth design and analysis.

  9. Ball and/or Lead screw design and analysis.

  10. Modal and/or non-linear buckling analysis.

  11. Fatigue analysis. 

  12. Actuation controls, control loop tuning, sensor selection.

  13. Simulation of actuated systems for performance analysis, dynamic response, and test verification.

Bonus Qualifications:



  • Familiarity with PDM systems

  • Proficiency in Matlab, Python, Mathcad, and/or Labview. 

  • Hands-on machine shop or mechanic experience (professional or hobby)

  • RTCA DO-160 testing experience

  • Demonstrated interest in aviation

  • Pilot’s license
