Chevron is accepting online applications for the position Counsel/ Senior Counsel through December 9th, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. (Central Standard Time).  

Overview of position:

This position is in the Americas E&P Law Group that provides timely and fit-for-purpose legal services to its North America Upstream exploration and production business units and headquarters groups.  This position serves the Mid-Continent Business Unit (MCBU), headquartered in Houston, a business unit responsible for onshore land acquisition, exploration, development, and production activities, including in Texas, New Mexico, and Alaska.  The position requires upstream oil and gas legal experience, providing oil and gas contracting and legal advice to clients.  The position requires working closely with, among others, MCBU Asset Development; Land and Business Development; Value Chain Optimization/Commercial; Environmental Management; Finance; Health, Safety and Environmental; Corporate Business Development; Operations; Corporate Affairs; Supply Chain Management; and Compliance personnel.  The Counsel/Senior Counsel will report to the Supervising Counsel of the MCBU legal group in Houston.

Position Details / Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal advice and counsel on a broad range of upstream and midstream issues impacting MCBU at the federal, state, and local levels. 

  • Represents the Company in negotiations with landowners/royalty owners, joint interest owners, contractors, suppliers, customers, and their legal counsel over exploration, production, land, gas sales/processing, gathering, and other agreements.

  • Drafts, reviews and/or approves complex contracts across a full range of land, business development, operations, supply chain, and VCO/commercial matters, as well as significant transactions, acquisitions and divestitures, and other business activities.

  • Works with clients and the Americas E&P Litigation team to manage and resolve disputes with third parties.

  • Offers general corporate and legal advice on compliance requirements, risk exposures and mitigation in areas such as antitrust, bankruptcy, corporate governance, employment, health, environmental and safety, information technology, procurement, public lands and policy.

  • Works closely with Corporate Affairs on U.S. and state advocacy, legislative and regulatory strategy, local community affairs, and the full range of external stakeholders.

  • Partners with other Law practice groups, including Environmental and Safety, Litigation, and other Americas E&P Law Groups, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor in Law from an accredited U.S. law school

  • Active membership in the State Bar of Texas, or actively admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction

  • Upstream oil and gas legal experience (preferably 5+ years), including experience drafting, negotiating, and closing oil and gas transactions and providing legal advice and counsel to clients

Relocation Options:
