JOB SUMMARY The Research Associate 1 serves as an entry level research professional that has a basic foundation in clinical research through assigned responsibilities in data management and by performing research and experimentation support following established protocols. This role exhibits increased learned skills and flexibility in performing duties, and assumes responsibility for simple clinical research protocols and timelines. JOB FUNCTIONS Directly responsible for properly managing and supervising the acquisition, processing, storage, accountability, shipping, and documentation of biological specimens. The Research Assistant ensures all Laboratory activities are performed correctly. Responsible for reading and understanding the study protocol and SOPs for procedures for the acquisition, processing, storage, accountability, shipping, and documentation of biological specimens for each study protocol prior to conducting any procedures. Responsible for properly preparing and cross-checking the study trays and tubes in advance of a clinical study. The Research Assistant is responsible for proper tray preparation, processing, sample accountability, storage and shipping of samples. The Research Assistant is responsible for accurate accountability records and storage of the specimens in a manner such that all specimens are easily retrievable. Ensures all Laboratory source documents are completed accurately. Research Assistant is directly responsible for proper shipping. All samples to be shipped will be inventoried by the Research Assistant. Research Assistant completes all required shipping documentation Research Assistant will make periodic checks to make sure of proper conduct of Laboratory operations on an ongoing basis. The Coordinators and Research Assistant work in close collaboration to ensure proper cross-checking of Laboratory procedures. The Research Assistant is responsible for monitoring the temperature and function of all freezers and other laboratory equipment. The Research Assistant is responsible for the moving of samples in the event of a freezer malfunction or power outage. Reports such temperature excursions to the PI and the Clinical Trials Manager immediately. The Research Assistant is responsible for meeting GCP, ICH and government regulations concerning Laboratory operations. The Research Assistant directly ensures all study team members who handle biological specimens have completed required safety and procedural training and have access to appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) to perform their duties and responsibilities safely prior to study implementation The Research Assistant ensures study staff shipping specimens must complete the biennial UM EHS Shipping Hazardous Materials training by EHS The Research Assistant ensures handling of all samples adheres to OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard using Universal precautions. Supports IRB process and ensures that the highest ethical standards are followed in research activities. Provides lab tutorials and reviews work done by research assistants Lab organization, management of basic lab functions (scheduling meetings, archiving, etc). High integrity and high conscientiousness for all research activities Orders laboratory supplies as needed. Attends and participates in sponsor meetings and training groups as requested. Contributes to basic and applied research activities by planning, coordinating, programming, collecting and analyzing data, disseminating findings. Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures Participates in the publication of research results. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice and guidance. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
