The Security Compliance and Privacy Engineering team (SCOPE) is creating a Release Engineering team to build and run mission critical infrastructure, often of national significance, to be secure, compliant, scalable, performant, observable, and efficient. We are looking for someone who will ensure workloads meet these criteria by design through closely working with product developers, internal compliance teams, and creatively thinking through problems.


What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?


The SCOPE RE team has all the challenges of running diverse workloads at massive scale with an added dimension of meeting some of the most stringent security and compliance requirements in existence today. This truly is a unique opportunity to apply your RE skills and mindset to difficult, but rewarding, engineering challenges that exist in only a handful of other environments. It will give you a chance to push the bounds of your security and compliance knowledge while at the same time growing core RE competencies (DevSecOps with Compliance) around building and running systems with SLAs that are critical to the success of our customers.


Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?


Success for the SCOPE RE team will come via a close partnership with other product engineering teams to help them achieve key compliance onboarding milestones in the environments we manage and maintain SLAs in both system availability and vulnerability remediation objectives.


What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?


  • A pipeline driven approach for building release engineering tools
  • Building container-based solutions using one of the programing languages is a plus
  • Handle upgrades of infrastructure and services through automation
  • Participate in change management meetings to plan the work of the team for changes requested
  • Run changes for other business units the team supports
  • Learn details of VMware product internals
  • Plan and perform work related to reducing toil, a key tenant of RE
  • Work closely with development teams to improve maintainability and reliability of services
  • Maintain SCOPE cloud services by performing service updates using CI/CD tools
  • Identify, gather, analyze and automate responses to key performance metrics, logs, and alerts
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate security standards
  • Conduct post-mortems to analyze failures and prevent recurrence
  • Provide service support by participating in regular on-call shifts responding to service issues
  • Maintain licensing, patching, compliance and build tools to do so
