The Kansas State University Department of Plant Pathology is seeking a motivated, independent, and organized Research Assistant to assist with all aspects of small plot field trials in the Applied Row Crop Pathology Research and Extension Program of Dr. Rodrigo Borba Onofre. The successful candidate will have experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) systems, diesel field equipment operation, agronomic crops, and the ability to travel to field-based experiment locations in Kansas as needed to survey for plant pathogens and collect research observations. This person will show commitment to work under safe conditions and will be expected to obtain a Kansas pesticide license and a commercial driver's license within the first 6 months of employment.

About This Role:

The Kansas State University Department of Plant Pathology is seeking a motivated, independent, and organized Research Assistant to support the Applied Row Crop Pathology Research and Extension Program of Dr. Rodrigo B. Onofre.

This individual will be critical for the implementation, coordination, and data collection of small plot research trials across Kansas, and laboratory and greenhouse studies that directly support Dr. Onofre’s program. The successful candidate will have experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS), diesel field equipment operation and maintenance, agronomic crops and plant and soil sample collection. They will need to have the ability to travel to field-based experiment locations in Kansas as needed to survey for plant pathogens and collect research observations and will be supervising and assisting undergraduate and graduate students with their research projects.

Projects will often require independent travel to remote field sites. This candidate will show commitment to work under safe conditions and will be expected to obtain a Kansas pesticide license and a commercial driver's license within the first 6 months of employment.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science in Agriculture, Agronomy, or closely related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating large and small field equipment (specifically with tractor and combine equipment)
  • Ability to setup, calibrate, and operate precision agricultural equipment
  • Previous production and/or research experience with corn, soybean, and sorghum or other row crops
  • Experience working collaboratively in dynamic research teams
  • Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) holder

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

$38,000-$45,000 ($18.27 - $21.63/hr.)
