Job Description

Danfoss is looking for an enthusiastic Sr. Technical Support Engineer. The Sr. Technical Support Engineer reports to the NAM Technical Support Manager and serves as point of contact for all NAM Danfoss Drives technical inquiries and Level II support. This role will be considered a hybrid position so we are open to candidates living within a 90 miles radius from our Loves Park IL; Milwaukee WI; Ames IA facilities. Many of the Technical Support responsibilities can be handled remotely, however, the right candidate must be able attend their nearest office in an as-needed basis, in accordance with business demand (approximately <20% of the time). Candidate must also be able to travel to our Loves Park, IL main office sporadically for business, development and/or training.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following.
  • Provide support to NAM Danfoss Drives customers via phone and email in a fast-paced, high performing contact center environment, owning and effectively following VFD-related issues through to resolution, including requests such as: Technical, troubleshooting, start up, installation, programing, commissioning, spare part ID, schematics/documentation, equipment crossover, case management/ development, and warranty support, amongst others.
  • Take ownership, research, diagnose, troubleshoot, and identify solutions to resolve escalated and/or complex system issues, often involving high-profile higher horsepower applications, fieldbus, common DC bus, drive and motor theory, power quality, etc.
  • Lead in the process of failure analysis and root cause identification for drive equipment as situations and customers require it. Identify quality issues, collect data, report, and channel through the appropriate avenues to ensure satisfactory resolution.
  • Supervise and support external service partners queries as part of Danfoss service procedures; provide or produce repair/service instructions in cooperation with affiliate team.
  • Provide expert support and assistance on high complexity and/or high-profile cases escalated from Level I, from within Level II or alternative internal routes and deliver adequate and timely solutions.
  • Support the 24/7 after-hours emergency phone line as part of a weekly, predefined, rotational schedule.
  • Develop and maintain an expert-level knowledge of product, service, application, drive, motor and electric theory, power quality/harmonic analysis, UL/CE/NEC/related standards, power electronics, business trends, and industry topics needed to support duties.
Background & Skills

The ideal candidate possesses these skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (or a mix of Associate degree and demonstrable extensive experience in the Variable Frequency Drive, Power Electronics, and Automation industry).
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant service and/or application experience in the Drives, Power Electronics or Automation industry.
  • A solid understanding of essential electric theory principles such as resistance, impedance, capacitance, inductance, electromagnetism, power conversion, 3 phase systems, synchronous and asynchronous machines, energy storage, hybridization, DC power circuits, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics of varying levels of complexity, including PCB level.
  • Ability to effectively use standard electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
  • Service and Application experience on Danfoss variable frequency drives is highly desirable. In lieu of Danfoss-specific knowledge, experience on other brand VFDs can be considered.
  • Experience implementing PLC and BAS systems.
  • Experience implementing fieldbus systems (Bacnet, Modbus, EthernetIP, etc.).
