Requirements:

Applicant must have earned a PhD in any STEM field within the last 7 years. This opportunity is partially provided by the National Science Foundation IPERF program, which requires applicants to have earned a STEM PhD within the last 7 years.

Overview of Role:

Lura Health (aka UCHU Biosensors, Inc.) is announcing an immediate opening for a Hardware Engineer with specific experience in electrical engineering and IoT sensor technologies. Applicants should be seeking a high-impact role in a rapidly expanding, venture backed, medical device startup. This new position will work directly with the CEO, CTO and Chief Clinical Officer to support the research and development of Lura Health devices.

Lura Health is a fast growing, VC backed early-stage medical device company developing a non-invasive remote patient monitoring tool. The primary technology is a highly miniaturized sensor that is worn in the mouth, continually records analytes in saliva such as pH, potassium, sodium and glucose, and automatically transmits data to a patient's smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy. The data is then shared to the cloud for storage, analysis, and review by doctors and medical professionals.

The focus of this position is to advance the development and testing of Lura Health's miniaturized sensor system. Candidates must be able to design and test electronic systems, design electromechanical lab testing systems, design testing protocols and perform analysis on data collected from Lura Health devices. The sensor system involves state-of-the-art sensor technologies, battery technologies, Bluetooth technologies and wireless charging technologies, so creative testing implementations will be necessary. Experience with miniaturized electronic systems and sensor testing setups are most critical for the candidate, but additional experience with programming (data analysis in Python or other scripting languages, C/C++, Arduino), microcontrollers (Raspberry Pi, Arduino), mechanical engineering (CAD design), 3D printing, and Linux-based computing (terminal, bash, headless systems) is preferred. On a high level, Lura Health is looking for a candidate who is excited to work on open-ended problems and can utilize a variety of skills to solve them.

Beyond technical work, the candidate will have opportunities to attend various conferences, professional networking events, and pitch competitions. There is potential for the candidate to be recognized in publications, patent applications, and work with the CTO and CEO on grant applications. Lura Health will provide the candidate with all necessary materials required to work with optimal productivity, including a laptop or custom PC, as well as any lab materials or instrumentation. Following the IPERF fellowship, there is opportunity to be hired onto the team for continued work expanding into a senior leadership position.

Responsibilities:

  • Design automated performance testing protocols and setups for medical devices
  • Analyze data from device performance tests
  • Assemble medical devices
  • Contribute to the electrical and mechanical design of microelectronic systems
  • Report to and discuss with the CEO, CTO and Chief Clinical Officer

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in electrical engineering, particularly in the design and debugging of microelectronics, sensor technologies, and wearable devices
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis with the use of programming language(s)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as be collaborative in team environments

Location:

This position is located at the HAX US Headquarters (), a new $50M co-working facility where portfolio companies in the deep tech, medical and climate industries can work together and collaborate. The HAX US Headquarters is in Newark, New Jersey, within walking distance of Newark Penn Station and the Broad Street New Jersey Transit stop. Lura Health team members live in both New Jersey and Manhattan, the office is easily accessible from both locations. The trains from New York Penn Station or the World Trade Center take 20 minutes to arrive in Newark if the candidate wants to commute from Manhattan. Candidates are required to primarily work in the office, but working from home on occasion will be an option.

The HAX US Headquarters is well equipped with a comprehensive mechanical workshop, electronics lab, and various prototyping tools (3D printers, 3 axis mill, laser cutter, waterjets, electronics workstations, etc). The HAX US Headquarters also frequently hosts investors or engineers who give interesting discussions and presentations. Rutgers University is nearby and Lura Health has access to various engineering resources on campus as well.
