The Principal Engineer (PDE) will have a detailed working knowledge of the US, Canadian, and IEC requirements and standards for Power and Automation products.


What you'll learn & achieve:




  • Drives consistency, integrity and engineering quality in the establishment and application of UL product safety certification requirements that are applied by staff located at all UL offices and affiliates.




  • Is a Qualified Reviewer for the assigned standard(s) and/or product types, and has working knowledge of UL safety principles and hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE).




  • Understands scheme requirements including US Safety Scheme, Canada Safety Scheme, and CB Scheme related to the safety certification services provided for the product types under area of responsibility.




  • Develops to implementation and maintains consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements in safety standards, as well as Certification Requirement Decisions (CRD), Standardized Appendix Pages (SAPs), Technical Guidance Documents (TGD), and other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL's product certification services.




  • Develops and/or reviews the development of technical content that serves as the basis of training programs for RLRs, Field Services and other UL staff to ensure appropriate and consistent application of requirements. Schedules staff meetings and/or teleconferences with RLRs for discussions of technical requirements, procedures, form usage, new technologies, industry developments, etc.




  • Serves as the Technical Lead of qualified New and Innovative products. In this role, develops or identifies requirements to address new technical developments or product features. Works in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders to develop the appropriate requirements for certification.




  • During the Collaborative Standards Development process (CSDS), and other Standards development processes for non-UL Standards, works with the responsible stakeholders to determine the scope and impact of certification requirements changes and need for and scope of an Industry File Review (IFR) as the result of standard revisions.




  • Works with the responsible OPS staff to determine any necessary equipment and skills needed resulting from the changes to the standard. Also works with OPS to determine the effective date of any needed IFR. In conjunction with OPS, initiates IFRs for UL certified products, ensuring all affected clients are advised of the new requirements.




  • Participates in UL, IEC, and similar Technical and Standards Development Meetings in the areas of assigned responsibility.




  • Represents UL and participates in industry association meetings related to the product types of assigned responsibility.




  • Provides technical support to Engineering and Commercial Operations, and makes technical presentations to industry.




  • Assists the Business Development team in the determination of new business opportunities, and advises of the technical resources needed to actively participate in new businesses.




  • Performs other duties as directed.




What makes you a great fit:




  • University degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program or related field plus directly related experience.




  • Detailed knowledge of UL operations and technical vocabulary common to involved categories.




  • Working knowledge of the relevant installation codes, regulations, or guidelines for Power and Automation equipment.




  • Working knowledge of Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) Principles.




  • Working knowledge of scheme requirements including US Safety Scheme, Canada Safety Scheme, and CB Scheme related to the safety certification services provided for the product types under area of responsibility.




  • Ideal candidate will have working knowledge of industrial controls, control circuit devices, switchgear, machinery, and related products, as well as demonstrated ability to evaluate these products using UL, CSA, IEC, IEEE, NFPA, and other related industry Standards.




  • Demonstrated ability to develop safety requirements for complex, new and innovative products.




  • Working knowledge of relevant industry issues, needs and problems.




  • Working knowledge of UL's Engineering Operations, Follow-up Services and Standards development process.




  • Ability to collaborate and perform as a respected technical resource for peers, management, and constituency.




  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
