The Senior Actuarial Analyst supports the actuarial pricing team with data, analysis, and other operational support for actuarial deliverables independently. The analyst will have well-rounded responsibilities in rating, underwriting, regulatory reporting, and forecasting. The analyst should perform the duties with limited guidance.

The Senior Actuarial Analyst will possess a strong actuarial skill set and must be on track to being credentialed, with proficiency in programming and strong mathematical and data analysis skills. The candidate will demonstrate exam progress as outlined in the Mass General Brigham Health Plan actuarial student program to qualify for study time, cost of materials, and incentives for passing exams.

Essential Functions

• Develop and maintains actuarial models in Excel

• Develops and maintains data needed for actuarial analysis

• Ability to respond to sales, product, or accounting areas questions on actuarial deliverables


• Support Actuarial Operations including but not limited to documenting and categorizing benefit plans, performing compliance calculations, developing rate filing exhibits, and various experience analysis

• Maintains and develops as needed actuarial mental health parity testing model

• Ensures compliance with actuarial standards of practice

• Support regulatory reporting with respect to rate development and financial analysis.

• Anticipates and meets, or exceeds, internal and/or external customer expectations and requirements; establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers and gains their trust and respect.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work is normally performed in a typical remote / office work environment.

Knowledge and Education

Required:

• Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent combination of training and experience in a quantitative discipline.

• Proficiency in Excel, SAS, SQL, and coding basics.

• Completion of 3 actuarial exams: Exams P, FM, and IFM (formerly Exam MFE) are required.
Preferred/Desired:

• Master's Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, or Actuarial Science preferred.

• Completion of additional ASA/FSA exam and educational requirements.

• Experience with SAS, VBA/R, or Power BI

• Strong writing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Experience

Required:

• 3 years of experience related to healthcare data analysis or insurance pricing.
Preferred/Desired:

• 4+ years of healthcare data analysis or insurance or finance experience.

Action

  • Senior Actuarial Analyst will support the development of premium rates and expense/revenue forecasting for commercial lines of business. Trend forecasting, market segment analysis, rate review, factor studies, regulatory reporting, model development, data analysis, and data presentation skills are key components of the position.
  • Works under general supervision and guidance on workflow, process and decision making.
  • Generally resolves most issues referring only more complex or unusual matters to a higher level

Organizational Relationships/Scope

  • Reports to Manager, Actuarial Pricing. Works closely with Product Management, Underwriting and Actuarial Reserving departments in the development of pricing for new plan designs.
  • Participates in Data Warehouse User Group and is a subject matter expert in maintaining actuarial datasets, models, and workbooks for regular and ad hoc analyses.
  • Interaction with analysts and managers in Accounting, Medical Economics, Risk Score Management, Financial Planning & Analysis, Product, PPDIS, Sales, Compliance, and Contracting.
