American Express is the leading payment card issuer for small businesses in the United States and supports business owners with products and services to help them run and grow their businesses. In addition, it s been years that Amex has been using big data algorithms to present relevant large merchant offers through Amex Offers. American Express moved to a big data infrastructure, built on a Hadoop platform and supporting machine learning to add intelligence to the data being gathered and processed. This has been boosting merchant recommendation systems to recommend uniquely personalized merchant locations & product benefits to our cardmembers.

The Amex AI Labs of American Express Corporation consists of several cross-functional teams on strategic ML product initiatives from conception to successful product outcome. As part of AI-Labs, we are leveraging cutting-edge AI & ML methods for fine-tuning recommendation engines which are leading to a new generation of merchant recommendation systems. Our group is the pioneer of AI-powered graph intelligence and offers ML graph-based solution for complex high impact business problems. We are looking for a data scientist who builds a comprehensive and high-performance library of graph algorithms and machine learning methods for the next generation of recommendation systems. This is a unique opportunity to help build our ML pipeline from ground up and drive innovation. The key responsibilities are:

• Be proactive in learning the top-notch advancement in AI and ML fields
• Passionate about Knowledge Graph, GNN, Graph Theory, and Graph Embedding
• Familiar with end-to-end large scale ML integration
• Interact with stakeholders and various internal and external teams on use case / project management, resource allocation, documentation, and future directions.
• Develop recommendation systems, including content customization and customer engagement improvement
• Predictive Analytics, including failure prediction, time-series forecasting, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis

Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite, in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days) or fully virtually.

If the role you are applying for is designated as hybrid or onsite, you will be required to demonstrate that you have completed your primary COVID-19 vaccination series (i.e., 2 doses for Moderna/Pfizer and 1 dose for J&J) and, for medically eligible* colleagues, a booster shot, in order to work in or visit any of our offices. This requirement is subject to legally required accommodations.

*Booster eligibility: The CDC has established guidelines for when adults are eligible to receive booster shots depending on when they completed their initial vaccine series (currently five months after the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, and two months after the J&J Vaccine). If you have completed your primary vaccine series but have not yet reached your booster eligibility date, you will be able to come into the office; however, you will need to complete your booster within 30 days of becoming eligible to continue coming in and participating in company-sponsored in-person events.

• Masters/PhDs in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Operation Research etc.)
• 2-5 years of hands-on experiences in machine learning and deep learning modeling
• A strong record of delivering machine learning and/or data products including defining business problems, identifying data strategy, building MVPs, and scaling prototypes to production solutions
• Team player with strong communication and leadership skills
• Expertise in python data processing libraries like pandas, numpy
• Knowledge on Big Data eco-system including tools such as Hadoop and Hive
• Experience in advanced statistical modelling, graph neural networks, graph embeddings, graph algorithms
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Expertise using Machine Learning and Deep Learning frameworks such as Scikit Learn, Tensorflow, Keras or Pytorch
• Ability to diagnose technical problems, debug code, and automate routine tasks, analytical approach coupled with solid communication skills and a sense of ownership
• Design and implement state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms in distributed machine learning frameworks such as Spark
