Location: This position is located in INDOT Crawfordsville. Role Overview: Develops detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance design plans for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the office and to be carried out by others. Independently conducts studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs and recommends changes based on findings regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects. Tracks project development relative to established performance measures. Signs plans and/or other engineering documents as a Registered Professional Engineer. Coordinates project development with external and internal agencies, including District offices. May train new personnel and mentor less experienced design staff. Performs other related duties as assigned.About the Job: As the Highway Engineer, you will be responsible for performing advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more multiple areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. In this position, you will ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. You will work independently and serve as an engineer in charge of complex projects responsible for compliance with contract specifications, providing guidance and technical direction to lower-level project staff. A Day in the Life: Develops detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance design plans for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the office and to be carried out by others; independently conducts studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs and recommends changes based on findings regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects; Tracks project development relative to established performance measures; Allocates resources to meet development schedules; Participates in long-range planning for the Office of Capital Program Management; Assists other offices in the evaluations of new design policies; Disseminates information on current design policies; Signs plans and/or other engineering documents as a Registered Professional Engineer; Ensures that all construction plans produced by a plan preparation section reflect the scope of services, existing field conditions, appropriate design standards, INDOT plan preparation procedures and sound engineering judgment. These construction plans may include drainage, traffic control, right-of-way, signals, lighting, landscaping, rest areas, geometric design, etc; Determines appropriate treatments for complex design situations where established policy does not apply; Coordinates project development with external and internal agencies, including District offices; Attends and participates in Scope of Services and review meetings; Operates state car to travel to projects to conduct field reviews; Develops, maintains, and reports on project work schedules and cost estimates; Assesses staffing and equipment needs; May train new personnel and mentor less experienced design staff; Prepares budgets; Keeps abreast of current design practices by attending conferences and reading trade publications, research papers, etc; Assists the Design Manager on special projects as requested; and, Performs other related duties as assigned.What You'll Need for Success: You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred) and other related fields from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school. Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required; exception may be made for individuals with an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana in a lower-level classification. At least six (6) years of experience in engineering (civil engineering is preferred), transportation research or related area. Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation. Broad knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures to the engineering specialty. Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features (such as roads, bridges, pavement, or traffic structures) in accordance with engineering design and construction standards, principles, and methods. Broad knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing incumbents filed of specialization. Broad knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and drafting functions to field of specialization. Ability to use initiative and creativity when making technical recommendations and decisions. Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to the functional area of specialization. Working knowledge of Indiana Design Manual (IDM), Indiana Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (IMUTCD), INDOT standard specifications and standard drawings. Knowledge of department systems not limited to Scheduling Project Management System (SPMS), Deighton Transportation Information Management System (dTIMS), ArcGIS, and Work Management System (WMS). You must satisfy the following requirements to be considered for an assigned specialty: Bridge: Ability to use bridge design software such as CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH, and Merlin Dash. Required to complete every 10 years National Highway Institute course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges", Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges , Bridge Inspection Refresher Training . Attend INDOT Bridge Inspection training classes, Annual Local Transportation Assistance Program (LTAP) County Bridge Conference at Purdue and Annual State Border bridge inspections - if in their District every year.
