Job Purpose:

The Sr. Systems Engineer will assist in the execution of tactical and strategic operational infrastructure initiatives by designing, building, and managing complex virtualization systems, automating aspects of system provisioning, as well as developing processes that operate at scale. The Sr. Systems Engineer will provide guidance to the Operations group and act as an escalation point for advanced troubleshooting.

Essential Functions:

Manage Edgios existing and new virtualization platforms (KVM and OpenNebula)

Develop and maintain core competencies of the team, in accordance with applicable architectures and standards.

Develops and maintains plans, processes, and procedures necessary for the proper deployment and operation of systems and services.

Identify gaps in the operation of products and services, and drive enhancements.

Continually evaluate release processes and tools to find areas for improvement.

Assist engineering and development with release and change management processes (eg, adding new platforms, new services, or systems changes).

Work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment while providing exceptional visibility to management and end-to-end ownership of incidents, projects, and tasks.

Maintain a positive demeanor and a high level of professionalism at all times.

Provide technical leadership and guidance to lower-level engineers.

Develop operational procedures/triggers/monitoring.

Make significant contributions to assigned projects (detailed design, etc.) and can work without supervision.

Ability to describe/train on most of the components of the system they support.

Can present on technology used at Edgio.

Drives optimization of components.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent experience typically obtained by five or more years related work experience.

7+ years experience with some flavor of.NIX (Linux, FreeBSD, etc.)

3-5 years managing a scalable, globally distributed, internally managed virtualization platform (VMWare, Xen, OpenNebula, OpenStack)

Expert level knowledge of open source virtualization technology such as KVM, Terraform, OpenStack and OpenNebula

Hands-on experience with at least one configuration management tool (Salt, Chef, Ansible, cfengine, etc.)

Experience with Version Control (Git)

3-5 years of experience programming in Python

3-5 years of experience programming in Bash/shell

Experience supporting internally developed as well as third-party customer facing products

Demonstrated ability to manage small projects (intra-team, typically fewer than 3 project resources)

Proven self-starter with the ability to document technical data in a clear and concise manner

Competent in the ability to track incidents, projects, and tasks on a daily basis

Excellent coordination, planning, and written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of the Agile project management methodologies

Experience with an automated build and continuous integration system such as Jenkins, a plus
