Department Overview:
The Web Developer is part of Digital Strategy: a small, cohesive team of developers, product owners, web engineers, customer support experts, and security engineers who support OHSU’s web presence. Digital Strategy is responsible for public and internal web experiences: the www.ohsu.edu public website, the OHSU intranet, and a custom web application platform. The Digital Strategy team creates and maintains a collection of content management systems, custom applications, and third-party integrations. Digital Strategy also leads the strategic vision of how digital assets are utilized to support OHSU’s missions.
The Web Developer will be joining the Digital Strategy team to support and participate in the development of a new intranet. This is a limited duration position for the duration of the project, which is scheduled to be completed on June 30th, 2023. The Web Developer is responsible for the architecture of web solutions, new feature/functionality development, troubleshooting, maintenance of content management systems, and collaborates on the design of new or enhanced web solutions. This work includes front- and back-end development.

Function/Duties of Position:
Web application development and maintenance

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to architect, implement, and maintain features and functionality across multiple content management systems and custom web applications.
  • For advanced troubleshooting and technical advice, this position may also provide direct support to internal customers.
  • This position also evaluates the risks and opportunities of applications to help inform the team’s priorities and to help advise developers across OHSU.
Technical operations

  • As a member of a small team of developers and web engineers, this position will contribute to a collaborative, DevOps culture that emphasizes continuous improvement.

  • This includes contributing to coding standards, processes, and policies related to security, performance, long-term sustainability of applications, the development life cycle, and other elements of OHSU’s web infrastructure.

Quality assurance: reviews and testing

  • This position participates in the team’s collaborative QA process: reviewing and responding to code reviews, writing automated tests, contributing to manual test plans, identifying dependencies and risks, creating mitigation plans, and conducting testing.
This position is currently 100% telework/remote and may include remote work long-term. Candidate must be able to work from home full-time initially.

Required Qualifications:
Education:

Master’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and two years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and four years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and five years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Six years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Knowledge of PHP, PHP files and theme functions, and knowledge of Drupal theme layer

  • Ability to architect enterprise solutions including data, display, and information architecture

  • Working knowledge of how to develop and scale performant web applications

  • Strong working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript frameworks and libraries

  • Familiarity with MySQL and MS SQL

  • Understanding of web infrastructure, including platform technologies, web servers, enterprise application deployment, and content routing

  • Understanding of secure coding concepts, common vulnerabilities, and mitigation methods

  • Thorough understanding of the software development lifecycle and exposure to agile

  • Solid understanding of user experience design principles

  • Ability to translate requirements and mockups into user interfaces and interactions

  • Desire to stay up on new web technologies, methods and standards

  • Ability to work both independently – with some supervision – and as part of a team

  • Commitment to support a culture of documentation – from comments in code to technical architecture to QA plans

  • Comfort with collaboration and open communication

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including an ability to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience

  • Demonstrated Core Competencies as established for this position

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience developing web applications

  • 2+ years of experience developing in Drupal and PHP implementations

  • Site-building experience in Drupal 8 or 9

  • Experience developing in a shared web environment with Git

  • Experience building responsive websites using Drupal CMS, HTML5/CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery

  • Experience implementing or supporting web applications with MVC frameworks

  • Experience writing unit and automated tests
  • Experience with web services and APIs

  • Experience writing complex database queries

  • Experience in an enterprise IT environment

  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting legacy web technology
