The Position

This is a limited continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on:

Under general supervision, incumbents in this class work with a wide variety of highly complex and sophisticated computerized safety, security and alarm systems. Incumbents also analyze client needs, install, maintain, test, and repair a wide variety of electronic safety, warning, and security equipment.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of
  • Computer software and programs used in alarm installation, local area network and wide area network (LAN/WAN) fundamentals, network monitoring, and system databases.
  • Electrical fundamentals, equipment, systems, and practices used in installing, maintaining, repairing, and servicing electronic alarm systems.
  • Access control, intercom, paging, closed circuit television and electronic alarm systems; telemetry, wire and fiber optic carrier equipment.
  • Principles of digital, integrated and solid state circuitry.
  • Electronics and electrical circuits.
  • Solid state theory and devices, including amplifiers and oscillators.
  • Basic tools and test equipment used in the maintenance, trouble shooting, and servicing of a variety of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Methods and procedures for storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Electronic and electrical systems safety practices.
  • Applicable State and Federal rules and regulations and building codes.
  • Principles of confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
Ability to
  • Learn and understand manufacturer specifications pertaining to all aspects of safety, security and alarm systems equipment installation and maintenance.
  • Identify, protect, and maintain confidential and sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, and disclosure.
  • Use computer workstation and laptop PCs for testing, diagnosing, and configuring electronic equipment including safety and security systems.
  • Repair, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of electronic equipment including safety and security systems.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
  • Work safely.
  • Work independently.
  • Interpret schematics and wiring diagrams for use in installing and maintaining safety and security devices.
  • Use electronic test equipment including ohmmeters, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and transistor test sets.
  • Apply local and state building codes as they relate to installing safety and security devices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Carry out written and oral directions.
  • Produce written reports of completed work.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other governmental and private business personnel.
  • Order parts and supplies to maintain inventory.
  • Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field.


Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either 1: Two years of full-time paid experience as an Electronics Technician in Sacramento County.

Or 2: Three years experience performing the duties of installation, maintenance, testing and repair of a broad range of electronic safety and security equipment and systems, including fire, burglary, and video security equipment.

Education Substitution:
Education or training in electrical technology, electrical engineering, electronics, communications technology or a field that is directly related to the knowledge and abilities above, may substitute for one year of the required general experience; acceptable proof of such education or training is one of the following:

a) an A.A. or A.S. degree, or higher, in one of the above fields from an accredited two-year or four-year college or university; or

b) a certificate of completion of a vocational training program in one of the above fields at an accredited college, trade or military school; or completion of 30 semester (45 quarter) units in one of the above fields at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university.

Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Licenses Requirement: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher is required prior to appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate driver's license may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4 or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Certification Requirement: Obtain factory certifications issued by equipment manufacturers of safety, security and alarm systems.

Criminal History/Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment within this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and applicable federal and state law. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

Physical Requirements:
  • Safely lift 50 pounds while standing and 25 pounds while leaning or lying in various positions
  • Safely lift and move heavy equipment utilizing appropriate tools
  • Crawl through attics
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Safely climb ladders and/or utilize lift trucks in the installation of equipment
  • Operate lift equipment
  • Normal color vision in order to successfully perform the job, such as distinguishing colors and reading blueprints.
Working Conditions:
  • Outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Work at considerable heights and in small awkward spaces
  • Remote areas
  • High security areas such as jails, detention facilities, courthouses, dispatch centers, and Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors that may affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin
  • Exposure to electrical power supply
  • Risk bodily injury from electrical shock
Shift, Weekend and Holiday Work Hours:
  • Incumbents may be required to work irregular hours and on-call.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
