Our work depends on a Database Engineer joining our team to remotely support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) activities.

You will also be trusted to project long-range requirements for database administration and design in conjunction with other managers in the information systems function. In this role, a typical day will include:

In this role, a typical day will include:
- Planning, developing, testing, implementing, monitoring, documenting, and improving the performance of database systems of high complexity
- Performing complex database evaluations and reviews and optimizes database configurations and access
- Proactively monitoring database performance and capacity and resolves performance or capacity issues.
- Recommending solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database security, data back-up, and recovery specifications.
- Researching and fact-finding to develop or modify database structures
- Providing support for database implementation and periodic maintenance releases as required
- Providing technical input to assist in development of tasks related to Database Administration during sprint planning and backlog refinement sessions
- Working with the Data Architecture team to ensure databases are synchronized across the environments
- Running advisory analysis and test candidate indexes to support and suggest query performance
- Explaining plans for application SQL and provide areas of improvement to the development teams. Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned
- Bachelors degree and 5+ years of relevant experience
- Hands-on experience with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)
- Strong command-line experience including AWS CLI, PowerShell, and Unix shell scripting skills
- Experience with Administering SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) technologies
- Ability to perform complex command-line scripts and perform SQL queries
- Experience with AWS RDS Administration
- Ability to thrive in an environment without a database management service
- Advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
- Must be able to obtain Public Trust clearance
- Must have lived in the United States at least three (3) out of the last five (5) years
- US citizen or a Green Card holder
- Knowledge of and experience with z/OS operating system, utilities, file system, kernel, memory management, and security on RDBMS
- Knowledge of IBM D2 LUW and Oracle database administration at the design, operational, and system levels
- Experience tuning complex database systems at the application, database, and systems-level
- Health Care Industry or prior CMS experience
- Agile experience
- Experience facilitating meetings and peer reviews
- Problem-solving skills and ability to think algorithmically
- Experience with JIRA and Confluence
