Principal Vehicle Electrical Engineer (Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Newark, NJ):
Provide technical support on a variety of electrical engineering tasks and assignments in the areas of rail vehicle procurement, modernization, and service for rail transit projects. Develop technical specifications for on-board traction power drives, auxiliary power converters, power collection and distribution, digital and analog train control systems, and individual electrical components. Review vehicle performance requirements and wayside infrastructure characteristics. Perform calculations, modeling and simulations using engineering software to establish required equipment characteristics and parameters. Review technical drawings, specifications, manuals, and other documentation for on-board traction drives, auxiliary power converters, power collection and distribution, on-board control systems, and general electrical equipment on behalf of clients. Conduct design calculations, perform modeling and simulations utilizing specialized software, and conduct system performance analysis to verify adequacy of the proposed designs for intended applications and compliance with performance requirements. Research component performance characteristics and application limitations. Review reliability, safety, and maintainability aspects of on-board equipment design for compliance with client requirements, industry standards, and applicable codes and regulations. Prepare and/or review detailed test procedures for qualification of component, subsystem, and vehicle performance and endurance characteristics and oversee execution of the test efforts. Identify performance and endurance requirements established by the client, industry standards, codes, and regulations that need to be confirmed via tests. Identify necessary test equipment and its characteristics. Establish detailed test steps required to confirm equipment compliance with the requirements and parameters to be recorded as evidence of successful test outcome. Oversee or perform the tests perform data processing, and record outcomes. Prepare reports of testing for client information and use. Perform engineering investigations and analysis on specific problems and issues. Conduct field inspections and measurements for on-board equipment in question, including development of electronic measurement setups and associated test procedures, data collection and offsite analysis using state of the art sensing, measurement, and data logging equipment. Utilize advanced data analysis techniques including statistical analysis and FFT to identify issues and characterize operating environment. Perform engineering analysis of the issues, including electrical/electronic circuit analysis, control system logic verification, transient behavior analysis, statistical data processing. Develop recommendations for equipment improvement, including updates to the control circuitry and algorithms, parts replacements, and changes to the maintenance techniques. Conduct physical inspections of rail vehicle electrical equipment for purposes of condition assessment and valuation. Assist Project Manager in evaluation of contract change requests for technical, production, operational, and economic impact related to projects. Review proposals from contractors and assist client in bid evaluation.



Full time employment, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



Must have a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, and 5 years post-bachelor’s, progressive work experience.



Of the required experience, must have 5 years of experience in each of the following:



  • Rail vehicle solid state traction drives and auxiliary power converters design and application to the rail rolling stock;
  • Application of power contactors, rotating machinery, semiconductors, and other power circuit components in the AC/DC overhead catenary and DC third rail power supply environments;
  • IEEE, EN 50000, and IEC 60000 series standards applicable to electrical/electronics aspects of rolling stock design and construction; and
  • Power lab environment and on-board equipment testing setups, data collection, and interpretation.


Domestic and international travel required 10% of time.
