Philanthropy & Engagement Associate Philanthropy Advisor
The Philanthropy & Engagement Division of Hope College is hiring for an integrated fundraising position titled Associate Philanthropy Advisor. This role serves as a strategic partner working with Senior Philanthropy Advisors and the AVP of Planned and Principle Gifts. This position will provide project management and portfolio leadership increasing the overall team capacity for discovery, cultivation and small group engagement experiences resulting in an enhanced pipeline of potential major gift donors. A successful Associate Philanthropy Advisor builds capacity by initiating, leading and designing donor opportunities for maximizing philanthropic impact and optimizing stakeholder experiences on campus and nationwide.
Project Leadership and Strategic Implementation (60%)
- The Associate Philanthropy Advisor will partner with Senior Advisors within and across Affinity Groups to secure venues for small dinners, create customized programming for engagement experiences and strategically coordinate travel by identifying top cities and unique venues within Michigan and the nation for highly integrated efforts. These priorities of the ideal candidate are not limited to:
- Supporting the engagement and fundraising operation through management of detailed timelines for engagement experiences including cities where faculty, students, alumni partners or administrators will be featured.
- Engaging in the planning and execution of compelling invitations, exemplary recruitment and follow-up strategies keeping a high return on investment top-of-mind.
- Assisting with cultivation and proposal writing projects, creatively and persuasively communicating the case for support and impact of giving.
- Collaborating with Senior Advisors to ensure all engagement experience milestones are tracked and recorded in Raiser’s Edge.
- Using Raiser’s Edge reports to demonstrate desired outcomes and present ideas for continuous improvement.
- Contributing to a positive and inclusive work community by building trusting partnerships across the college, continually learning, creating impactful experiences and working with a sense of ownership for short-term and long-term outcomes.
- Performing other duties as required or assigned.
- In partnership with the Senior Advisors, create and implement small, custom engagement experiences in support of Hope Forward and micro-campaigns within the Affinity Groups.
- Serve as a strategic partner to the Alumni Engagement, Donor Stewardship, Corporate Relations, Grants and Annual Giving teams.
- Adhere to college and division policies and best practices, especially ensuring that all philanthropy and engagement personnel and efforts in the division reflect, as fully as possible, diversity, equity and inclusive excellence.
Portfolio Leadership and Discovery (40%)
- Prepare discovery briefings for Senior Advisors, AVPs and VP to ensure donor engagement is managed on a 30, 60 and 90 day timeline.
- Maintain, support and monitor movement within the Senior Advisors Top 20 prospect pool including discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship moves management in a way that adds value to the Stewardship Team and Senior Advisors work.
- Focus on managing a portfolio of approximately 300 donors to increase pipeline participation based on Affinity Group priority fundraising initiatives, including and not limited to:
- Facilitating quarterly engagement experiences in five or more top cities in partnership with each Senior Advisor, AVPs, VP and/or the President’s Office.
- Leading a dynamic portfolio of assigned donors with capacity to make meaningful current use and planned gifts.
- Working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment that requires emotional intelligence, strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in all decision-making with confidentiality a top priority.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of two years of experience working in higher education or in the non-profit sector with progressive leadership in project management, recruitment or strategic systems design, or equivalent.
- Comfort and experience with successful “first contact and cold call” opportunities
- Writing examples to demonstrate an established, creative professional approach which can quickly adapt to a more personalized, persuasive form of communication for building and maintaining relationships.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize and implement ongoing planning, project management and improvement processes
- Ability to forge a dynamic teamwork environment, and an ability to build rapport, confidence and trust with donors, potential donors, alumni, parents and friends of Hope College
- Resilience with a flexible approach to frequent business travel is required to be successful in this role
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
- Knowledge of donor segmentation and prospect research
- Knowledge of and expected proficiency within first 6 months of employment of Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), databases (FileMaker/Access) and CRMs/Networked Information Systems (Raiser’s Edge)
- Experience partnering effectively with team members who spend most of their time traveling and/or working off campus
- Desire to expand knowledge of philanthropic industry best practices and major gift skills
- High curiosity to initiate compelling marketing techniques to re-engage alumni who haven’t been engaged with the college over time
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
