Purpose of Position
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Why does the job exist?
This position serves as the statewide coordinator for New Mexico Department of Transportation's (NMDOT) Wildlife Program within the Environmental Bureau and is the expert on wildlife biology, wildlife passage, mitigation of animal-vehicle collisions, and implementation of the New Mexico Wildlife Corridors Action Plan.
How does it get done?
This job develops and manages wildlife passage goals and projects, enters and analyzes Geographic Information Systems data, performs and reviews wildlife research, prepares grant funding proposals, prepares public presentations, performs public speaking, and coordinates with government, tribal, and non-governmental stakeholders. Additional duties include management of consultant contracts and performance of natural resource field work, inventories, and report preparation.
Who are the customers?
This position serves the NMDOT's Environmental Bureau, in cooperation with NMDOT's Districts, Region Design Centers, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and other external stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years work experience in wildlife biology with a relevant Bachelor's degree, or three (3) years work experience with a Master's or higher degree. Experience with GIS, public speaking, grant writing, and project presentations is preferred.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Animal Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Physical Science or Chemistry and four (4) years of experience in environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science and/or chemistry. Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
This position is mainly within an office setting with extensive personal computer and cell phone usage, and participation in on-line and in-person meetings. Occasional long-distance driving and overnight travel is required, with field work in difficult terrain, roadside environments, and in potentially inclement weather.
