Product quality engineer

Cleveland-Cliffs Cleveland Works has an immediate opening for a Product Metallurgist in our Primary Quality Assurance Division in Cleveland, Ohio.

The following primary position responsibilities and key position requirements are intended to provide an overview of the position but are not all-inclusive.

Cleveland Cliffs Cleveland Works produces hot rolled steel as well as cold reduced, galvanized and galvannealed coated products for automotive, appliance and other markets.

This position is within the Quality department.

Job Description :

• Disposition continuously cast slabs for suitability to various customers and applications.


• Support on-time delivery and customer satisfaction by working with internal organizations to maintain product flow.


• Work with Customer Service to refer out of specification slabs for customer approval where appropriate.


• Maintain quality management system in designated area(s) of Primary Operations. This includes standard operating procedures, measurement device calibrations, training records, etc.


• Support Primary Operations in development and maintenance of grade specifications and practices.


• Assist Senior QA Engineer in investigation, analysis, and improvement of product defects found through internal inspection or customer claims.

Institute permanent corrective actions or process improvements as necessary.

• Support Senior QA Engineer in development and implementation of process improvement trials as well as monitoring and evaluating trial material to determine suitability for use and trial results.



• Will need to function in a team environment and provide support to team members.


• Position requires scheduled weekend and holiday coverage and occasional off-turn work for trials or in support of the operation.

Weekend coverage generally consists of one weekend per month.

• Must be comfortable working in a heavy industrial / mill environment.

Minimum Qualifications :

• Bachelor of Science in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related discipline


• Exceptional communication skills and detail orientation are essential


• Solid computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

Preferred Qualifications :

• 2 years of experience in steel or other metals industries


• Experience in oxygen or EAF steelmaking, secondary refining, and / or continuous casting


• Experience with quality assurance in automotive or appliance supply chains


• Data and statistical analysis experience and basic SQL and Excel macro knowledge


• Experience with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, or similar quality standards
