Who We Are:

PowerLight was co-founded by our CTO, Tom Nugent and Dr. Jordin T. Kare, an MIT Physicist and aerospace engineer that was known for his research on laser propulsion and his work on the Clementine lunar mapping mission. We have set numerous world records for beaming power over light and won two NASA project awards. We are the first to develop a viable technology platform that demonstrates the safe transfer of 400 watts over 1 kilometer. No one else in the world has done this level of power and distance and we are not stopping there. We have great tech, a clear mission, a culture we love and great benefits. We are looking for teammates to join us in changing the way networks and new technologies will be powered.

What you’ll do:

PowerLight Technologies is looking for talented engineers that want to help build the world’s premier company in the new field of wireless power transmission.

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will work closely with our Optical, Electrical, and Product engineers to create optomechatronic architectures for laser-power transmitters, receivers, and safety systems. This individual must be very hands-on, but also prepared to manage others as we grow our team.

What we need from you:

  • Create designs and high quality documentation for complex power-beaming components and sub-systems
  • Perform and manage engineering work using CAD/CAE software to solve problems in mechanical/structural design, finite element analysis, design optimization, prototype generation, fatigue analysis, structural dynamics and kinematics, vibrations, thermal analysis, and production of manufacturing drawings
  • Design, build, and test custom metrology equipment and low volume manufacturing, alignment, and optical assembly equipment
  • Design and ownership of electro-mechanical and electro-optical mechanisms including assembly and system testing and tuning
  • Work with Electrical Engineers in physical electrical systems layout definition including defining compact PCBA’s, flexible circuits, wire routing, cable harnesses, and connectorization
  • Work with optical engineers to integrate tight-tolerance optical components.
  • Integration of optical components, sensors, and actuators into prototype products
  • Explore and develop novel processing methods and build relationships with specialists’ vendors
  • Develop and present concept design reviews and status updates to development teams

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Opto-Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years experience in a design engineering role, with system or product ownership
  • Expert CAD skills - Your choice of design platform
  • FEA modeling: thermal, static and dynamic analysis of mechanical component performance
  • Experience designing for various manufacturing processes including machining, CNC, injection molding, and 3D printing
  • GD&T experience and high proficiency with tolerance analysis
  • Experience with optical components, electronic packaging, thermal management, and basic metrology
  • Experience designing, building, and testing prototypes
  • Experience with precision mechanism design; and incoming inspection of associated mechanical parts
  • Hands on experience with shop tools such as chop saw, band saw, grinders, lathes, etc...tinkerers are welcome
