JOB TITLE: Speech-Language Pathologist

Job Classification: Professional

Reports To: Clinical Director

Position Expectations: General Summary - Assess and treat speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. May select alternative communication systems and teach their use. Collaborate with inter-disciplinary rehabilitation treatment team.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Administer speech and language evaluations, tests, or examinations to patients to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written and oral tests and special instruments.
  • Design, develop, and employ alternative diagnostic or communication devices and strategies.
  • Teach clients to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles, and breathing mechanisms. Use computer applications to identify and assist with communication disabilities.
  • Participate in and write reports for meetings regarding patient’s progress, such as care conferences and monthly reports.
  • Educate patients and family members about various topics, such as communication techniques and strategies to cope with or avoid personal misunderstanding.
  • Evaluate speech and language test results, barium swallow results and medical or background information to diagnosis and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, and swallowing disorders.
  • Observe, analyze, and record patient’s progress and participation towards treatment goals.
  • Attend staff/supervision meetings and monthly case conferences.
  • Attend and participate in TBI functions, i.e., community based programs when requested.
  • Maintain ethical standards and responsibilities in accordance with requirements of the profession and position.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy from an accredited educational program with Certificate of Clinical Competence. Working knowledge of neuro-anatomy as well as brain injury preferred.
