Brief Summary of Work for this position:

Attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel have challenging, wide-ranging practices and must be able to handle multiple unrelated matters at the same time with proficiency. The Associate General Counsel must be able to complete complex projects both independently and with direction from the General Counsel, The Associate General Counsel will be a general practitioner, with specific areas of focus assigned by the General Counsel based on personal experience and institutional need. Regardless of assigned focus areas, the Associate General Counsel will be expected to research, provide advice on, and draft communications and legal documents regarding the full range of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to a UNC constituent institution.

The Associate General Counsel dispenses legal and risk advice on a wide range of legal services in support of the University, focusing primarily upon preventative counsel and risk advice in various subject matter areas supporting the various activities of the institution. This position provides legal advice, counsel, and representation on an independent basis, with only general supervision from experienced supervisors, while keeping supervisors appropriately informed and engaged.

The Associate General Counsel serves as a recognized expert legal advisor in two or more specialty areas, (set forth in more detail below) as well as, any other practice areas as needed by the client. The attorney gathers information from and submits variety of forms and filings to state and federal agencies on variety of matters.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA accredited law school; licensed to practice in NC within 12 months of hire; minimum of 5 years of post-license experience as a practicing attorney, where all or substantially all time is devoted to the practice of law in one or more specialty areas.
  • Currently licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, or censure or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience :

  • Knowledge and familiarity with North Carolina higher education and agency relationships is a plus.
  • Ability to deliver legal advice in an understandable manner and in such formats as may be desired by the organization, including through written correspondence, memoranda, briefs, and presentations, with little or no editing or revision by supervisors
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with and gain confidence of senior leaders in the organization with respect to legal services, such as legal and risk management situations.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the professional development of colleagues and/or leadership in the profession; of contributing to the development of the profession (e.g., NACUA, state bar associations, CLE presentations) and the development and progress of clients; and of a strong ability to develop and maintain collegial professional relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice, counsel, and representation on an independent basis, with only general supervision from experienced supervisors.
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently as a recognized expert legal advisor in two or more specialty areas, and the willingness to function in any other practice areas as needed by the client
  • Excellent analytical, research, problem solving, and interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize; excellent communication skills; collegial; professional; sound judgment
  • Legal experience supporting a public higher education institution preferred.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Office of the General Counsel, as a unit of the Chancellor's Division, provides, manages, and coordinates all legal services for UNCW in a collegial, responsive, and professional manner. The office provides these services on university matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the senior officers, other university administrators, staff, and faculty who are acting on behalf of the university. The attorneys and legal staff are committed to rendering high quality, cost effective, and responsive legal and risk management advice to facilitate the achievements of UNCW's goals of teaching, research, scholarship, and service. The goal of our office is to provide professional advice minimizing risk, reducing litigation, and identifying and responding to legal issues affecting the university.
The Office of the General Counsel researches the law and advises the university on compliance with applicable federal and state law and regulations and UNC policies, drafts and/or reviews contracts, grants, and license agreements, and advises on a wide variety of legal and risk management matters to include employment, student affairs, business affairs, litigation, advancement, civil rights, public records, real property, public finance, facilities development, sponsored programs, and intellectual property matters. The office is responsible for selecting, engaging, and supervising any outside counsel retained by the university. We represent the university in a variety of administrative proceedings and coordinate all litigation conducted by the North Carolina Attorney General's Office on behalf of the university.
