Our client in Richmond, VA is in immediate need of a Senior Design Engineer. This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday, 6:30am-3pm. The Design Engineer reports to the Operations Manager. The primary focus of this position is for mechanical design and support data (tooling, drawings, BOMs, standard work instructions), so that the production team can be successful in manufacturing, inspecting, and delivering a high-quality product. The Design Engineer will also assist in planning, directing, and coordinating those activities concerned with the plant safety, design, construction, maintenance and improvement of the products, equipment, and physical plant. Responsibilities may include troubleshooting and overseeing the repair of complex machinery, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical equipment.

Role and Responsibilities:

Retrofit and redesign existing plant equipment to provide maximum productivity, flexibility and reduced costs.
Assist in preparation of annual capital expenditure budgets as well as capital expenditure requests (justification) for the individual projects and determines the cost effectiveness of those projects by calculating the ROI.
Prepare bid sheets, contracts and drawings for capital improvement projects. Tests newly installed equipment to assure fulfillment of contract specifications.
Assure product compliance with governing standards (ANSI).
Support and improve Production by designing and qualifying new tooling and fixturing.
Proactively identify areas in need of standardization and/or poka-yoke.
Define critical spare parts lists for all plant tooling and equipment.
Spec and quote third-party turnkey equipment to support existing and future production lines.
Create LOTO plans for all plant production equipment.
Create PM schedules for all plant production tooling.
Reverse engineer, digitize and document all internal product designs.
Develop Bill of Materials with routings for ERP system.
Ability to work with outside contractors, and production personnel, at all levels, to achieve corporate goals.
Experience in budgeting, quality assurance, troubleshooting, equipment design, plant process improvement, statistical process control and OSHA compliance.
"Hands-on" approach to problem solving.
Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.
Assist Safety Manager in performing job safety analysis (JSA), process hazard analysis (PHA), develop and
implement safe work practices to prevent injury.
Investigate/troubleshoot technical problems and help to establish procedures and corrective actions to avoid recurrences.
Provide technical support to maintain and upgrade plant equipment and systems.
Develop, implement, and maintain SWIs for employees, leadership.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Minimum of 10 years of mechanical design and industrial tooling experience.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Proficient with CAD software (SolidWorks) and design processes.
Should have work experience of BOM creation, configuration, and CAD master model creation.
Demonstrates strong commitment to improving safety, environmental, operational, and cost performance.
Experience in project management and reliability improvement.
Commitment to continuous improvement.
Adaptable, autonomous, and self-motivated.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work independently and effectively in a fast paced and high stress environment, be proactive, and follow up on outstanding issues until a successful resolution is achieved is required.
Capable of working in an environment in which demands and priorities change.
Strong sense of urgency.
