Job Description
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Academic Advisement, the Advisor serves as a resource for men and women undergraduates from the Sy Syms School of Business, by providing individualized counseling to students, working with them to develop their academic goals and meet academic requirements. The Advisor coordinates a number of services that promote student academic success.
Position Responsibilities:
Help students transition to university life, and familiarize students with academic policies and procedures
Advise undergraduates on their academic programs, academic strategies, and plans to fulfill both general requirements and major requirements within the Sy Syms School of Business
Assist students in evaluating post-graduation plans, including graduate school options
Work with the Admissions Office and with prospective students; serve as liaison between students and Syms Dean's Office, Registrar's Office, and faculty
Work with the Director of Syms Honors Program to track student performance and design and implement interesting honors courses and events
Update online and printed student materials such as prerequisite lists, Program of Study sheets and Syms Academic Student Advisement Guide and work with the administration and the faculty to ensure that all curriculum is up to date and clear to students
Experience & Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree and at least two years experience working at a university, preferably in academic services or master's degree in a related field
Knowledge of the principles of business is required
Basic familiarity with Jewish Studies preferred but not required
Skills & Competencies:
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with an attention to detail and accuracy
Must be comfortable working with students, deans, faculty, parents, and discussing student issues in confidential manner
Candidate will demonstrate a proven ability to take initiative and work collaboratively as part of a team
Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically EXCEL
This position will include responsibilities on both Manhattan undergraduate campuses (i.e. Washington Heights and Murray Hill)
Occasional night and Sunday hours will be required
