Wide Effect Talent Solutions has partnered with an industry leading Defense Contractor with an immediate need for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will work closely with the Systems Design Manager to develop, integrate, and test the completed designs. Assists the Systems Design Manager to manage the design effort within schedule and budget and coordinates design reviews. Supports the transition to production and oversees the design of agreed to changes to the configuration baseline. Assist the Systems Design Manager with scope management, develop bid and proposal responses that include both the creation of technical and pricing strategies and resulting in the preparation and submission of proposal within an assigned SWBS section. Develops budgets and schedules, manages performance, reports progress, and initiates action to assure program/project objectives and schedules are met and work is performed within budget and according to specifications. Resolves problems at a detail level and escalates risks as needed.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interview, onboard, train, assign work, and implement performance improvement recommendations of the assigned SWBS section team.
  • Daily meetings with assigned SWBS section group members to identify and resolve any issues. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will Escalate unresolved issues to the Systems Design Manager and fellow SWBS section leads.
  • Monitors and controls design contractual commitments to ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, and terms of the contract.
  • Alongside the Weight Manager, monitor and control the weight systems in order to meet design targets.
  • Approve Engineering Change Notifications in a timely manner to formally release design data.
  • While maintaining contractual requirements, efficiently implement Engineering Change Requests into the design.
  • Precisely outline all mission system requirements and lead the system design and navigate solutions through to production and implementation.
  • System life-cycle activities including System Requirements Review (SRR), System Design Review (SDR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Detailed/Critical Design Review (DDR/CDR).
  • Develop engineering deliverables in accordance with applicable processes, ensuring safe, fit for purpose engineering deliverables, and presenting material associated with the above gate reviews.
  • Working with ABS lead as part of the integrated project team, confirm the design aligns with relevant standards.
  • Coordinates with sub-contractors and vendors to ensure timely receipt of deliverables as well as compliance to the requirements.
  • Analyze fuel, HVAC, steering, hydraulic, and propulsion systems to determine size requirements, power requirements, performance curves, and associated losses.
  • Perform hand calculations and FEA on structural components/assemblies to verify working stresses are below ultimate, yield, and endurance allowables.
  • Develop NX 3D models and associated 2D drawings for existing and new products in accordance with company, industry, and project standards.
  • Release drawings into Teamcenter system following company workflow.
  • Create engineering reports to show compliance with project requirements based on design, test, analysis, and similarity.
  • Partner with quality to troubleshoot installation issues, determine root cause, and recommend solutions.
  • Create product illustrated parts diagrams and write product manuals.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the department by creating work instructions for best practices as well as mentoring/training junior engineers/designers.


Qualifications

  • Management - The ability to work within tight deadlines and multi-task various activities in an organized manner.
  • Oral & Written Comprehension & Expression - Candidate must have excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, conflict management, and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience leading small teams of engineers.
  • Bachelor s degree in Mechanical Engineering, 10+ years of experience in propulsion, hydraulic, fuel, water, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience with government procurement and contracting.

Skills:

  • Automation - MS Office, Project.
  • CAD NX, Teamcenter, AutoCAD.
  • Process - Understanding of the project management process as defined by the PMI PMBOK.
  • Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others. Ensuring that all aspects of the program are met on and according to schedule.
  • Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems and possess analytical skills.
  • Writing & Speaking - Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Compliance Steel and aluminum boatbuilding, mechanical and electrical systems to ABS and ABYC standards.
  • Design - Experience complying to ASME, and ANSI drafting standards a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and boats from the beginning of production through the sea trails. This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete aluminium hull structures.
  • Ability to lift packages, equipment, etcetera, up to 50 lbs.
