Senior Perception/SLAM Engineer

Full time position based in Pasadena, CA

OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and farthest on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.

We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real-time system platform for control, decision making and execution.

We are looking for a Senior Perception/SLAM Engineer to lead the integration of state-of-the-art classical and deep learning algorithms for SLAM/navigation. You will lead a team of engineers working in the design and implementation of Visual and ML based SLAM and navigation algorithms for single and multi-unit/swarm robot navigation. Extensive experience with sensor fusion, Visual SLAM and/or different algorithmic approaches/latest research on SLAM for GPS based and GPS denied environments is a must. Experience with autonomous navigation, including latest research on path planning and collision avoidance is also a must. You will be responsible for integration and test of robust intrinsically safe modules, with maximum levels of reliability, performance, and efficiency. Your Team will work with the Mechatronics and Software & Controls Groups to ensure seamless, effective and safe integration of the algorithmic stack with the real system. You will develop simulation and real based test environments to verify the successful, safe and reliable operation of the modules you develop.

To hit the ground running, you need:
  • MSc or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, robotics, Machine Learning or equivalent with at least 3 years of professional experience.
  • Extensive experience in the design and implementation of novel/high performance Visual SLAM for mobile platforms in both GPS based and GPS denied environments (autonomous vehicles, robotics or IOT devices).
  • Experience optimizing SLAM approaches for real world applications.
  • Solid background in one or more SLAM related areas:
  • RGBD, monocular or stereo visual SLAM
  • Sparse / semi-dense / dense / feature-based / direct SLAM
  • Semantic SLAM
  • ML methods for SLAM
  • Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO)
  • Filtering-based state estimation (EKF, Particle Filter)
  • Large-scale visual recognition / relocalization / mapping
  • Experience developing state-of-the-art, online and offline state estimation algorithms by fusing information from cameras, IMUs and other sensors.
  • Practical experience in validation and optimization of your algorithms against real world data sequences.
  • Experience in the design of automatic data generation pipelines that create high quality, unbiased ground truth datasets.
  • Experience in estimation, probabilistic modeling, optimization, point-set registration and/or sensor fusion.
  • Experience in the development of robust sensor calibration routines that perform reliably in complex and unpredictable environments.
  • Experience in collaborative design to develop products. Capable of developing effective partnerships within the organization to define requirements and translate user needs into effective, reliable and safe solutions.
  • Strong Python, C/C++, ROS skills. Proficiency in software programming standards and data structures is highly desired.
  • Experience in multi-agent SLAM and navigation is a plus.
  • Experience with GPU/DSP/NEON programming and performance optimization for mobile applications is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written/online communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading teams for research and development or production.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and organize your work to meet deadlines. Comfortable multi-tasking/working on different projects concurrently.
  • Self-driven, passionate and constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence.
