Department of BioengineeringResearch Assistant ProfessorThe George Mason University Department of Bioengineering, within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant Professor to work in the area of novel ultrasound-based techniques for assessing wound healing. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Project:This effort is part of a DARPA-funded research consortium, Treatment and Recovery Augmented with Electrical and Ultrasound-Mediated Actuation and Sensing (TRAUMAS) program. Our interdisciplinary research team is based at the Center for Adaptive Systems of Brain Body Interactions. Ongoing projects bridge multiple disciplinary areas including bioengineering, neuroscience, psychology, and rehabilitation through extensive collaborations. Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and research platforms for imaging (ultrasound, MRI, near infrared spectroscopy), neuroscience (multichannel EEG, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, transcranial Doppler), as well as clinical research facilities for cardiovascular, neurosurgery and rehabilitation research applications through our clinical partners.The successful candidate will have an opportunity to get involved in research projects with one or more of these collaborating centers. As part of the research experience, applicants will be expected to develop their own research aligned with the broad overall goals of our laboratories and collaborators and receive mentoring for developing research proposals.Responsibilities:Spearhead the research to develop novel methods that use conformable ultrasound transducers for 2D and 3D imaging and for wirelessly actuating drug-loaded hydrogel implants for localized drug delivery. In addition, they will interact closely with collaborators at partnering institutions (Columbia, MIT, Harvard Medical, Northwestern, Utah, Medtronics, Blackrock, and IBM) to provide support for small-animal studies and translating these methods to clinical practice;Take a leadership role in ongoing research projects and will be encouraged to develop personal research aligned with the broad goals of our laboratories and collaborators. Applicants will receive mentoring for developing research proposals, and participation in career development activities will be strongly encouraged;Design experimental protocols for small-animal ultrasound imaging using the Verasonics system and data analysis; andMentor and train post-doctoral fellows and students in the lab.Required Qualifications:Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field;At least three years of postgraduate experience biomedical imaging and/or sensor instrumentation design and fabrication; andDemonstrated academic record of scientific excellence.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated experience in independent research;Experience in research in multidisciplinary teams;Strong research background in ultrasound imaging and instrumentation;Experience in small-animal procedures and imaging protocols; andExperience in drafting IACUC protocols.Mason Engineering: The Future of Engineering is HereThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and the School of Computing.
