Hardware Lead/Project Manager

M3 Design is a product development firm that creates solutions for a wide variety of clients across the lifestyle, healthcare, and workplace industries. We are a group of creative problem solvers that utilize industrial design, UI/UX expertise, and engineering to help our clients bring world class products to market. Our engineering team is looking for a Project Manager/Hardware Lead to help drive the technical development of complex electro-mechanical solutions and manage projects to completion.

Engineering at M3 Design

M3 Design thrives on creativity, curiosity, and a hands-on approach to engineering. Our engineering team helps design and implement successful products and experiences for our clients and their customers. We transition ideas from concept all the way to production. Throughout the design process we work closely with clients to ensure successful outcomes. We work on consumer and business-to-business products, wearables, medical devices, capital equipment, experiences, and a wide range of other products. These systems may include mechanisms, motion systems, high and low volume parts, optics, electronics, and sensing.

What you'll do...

This role has two primary responsibilities. You will be a technical project manager for client projects that include industrial design, UI/UX, and mechanical/electrical hardware design activities. As M3 Design expands its offerings and capabilities in electrical hardware development, you will also act as a technical lead for projects involving electrical hardware and embedded systems.

As a project manager you will be responsible for managing the progress and deliverables required to meet the program objectives. You will lead a cross-functional team of designers and engineers, while communicating progress/status to the client. As a project manager you will also identify and track resources, budgets, materials, and schedules. You will be heavily involved in project scoping as well.

As a hardware lead, you will be responsible for overseeing the development of the custom electrical hardware for our client's products. The hardware may be developed with internal resources, outside electrical engineering consultancies, or ODM/JDMs. You will conceptualize and architect systems, write design requirements, establish and maintain relationships with consultancies/ODMs/JDMs, and evaluate the output of external partners. In some cases, you may be responsible for designing the hardware in-house.

Additionally, as a senior member of the engineering team, you may provide engineering support to the sales and marketing teams, scope and create proposals for new projects, and help mentor junior engineers.

What we're looking for...

  • Project management skills (scoping, planning, scheduling, budgeting, managing clients)
  • Demonstrated ability to drive projects with cross-functional teams to completion across the product development lifecycle
  • Curiosity, creativity, and the desire to find the best solution to a problem
  • Aptitude for designing electrical hardware and embedded systems.
  • Ability to develop multiple concepts for a problem and quickly validate them through testing, engineering analysis, mockups, and prototyping
  • Ability to vet potential partners (foreign/domestic, consultancies, ODM/JDMs, CMs)
  •  Excellent writing and visual presentation skills
  • Subject matter expert on emerging technologies in the fields of vision, sensing, control, wearables, wireless/IoT, etc.

Skills and Experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering from an accredited university
  • 7+ years of experience designing electrical hardware and/or embedded systems
  • Mix of experience with analog, high-speed, and power. Experience with wearables, IoT devices or medical devices is a huge plus.
  • 2+ years of project management experience
  • System architecture development
  • Experience managing efforts of in-house hardware design resources and outside hardware design firms, ODMs, and JDMs
  • PCB schematic and layout design
  • Experience creating and managing complete release packages for designs (schematics, BOM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
  • Comfortable presenting work to small and large groups (clients, co-workers, vendors)
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior team members

5-10% travel may be required
