Develops and implements HIM strategies to drive highly effective system function with strategies that evolve to remain contemporary to industry.  Responds to industry change in HIM guidance, technology solutions and best practices.  Drives standardization of practices and procedures.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs HIM function for best practice service delivery. Leverages technology and vendor solutions to deliver high performing function that is cost efficient.
  • Recruits, interviews, promotes, trains, disciplines, and terminates staff. Sets performance standards, goals for direct reports and the department. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.  Provides development opportunities for staff growth.  Creates team environment and engagement strategies for largely remote workforce.
  • Defines tools to measure progress and ensures consistent achievement of business objectives for the department; evaluates new technology to improve maintenance, handling and retention of patient medical records, recommends new equipment, solutions and methods. Leads implementations.
  • Ensures education and policies are in place to protect health information and to promote the efficient and accurate coding and billing of services. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Creates and oversees operating budgets for SSM system HIM function. Manages to budget targets. Seeks innovative ways to reduce operating expenses and develops the necessary programs to deliver cost-effective services and products.
  • Analyzes and evaluates data to better improve procedures, systems and set standards for improvement. Keeps abreast of health care industry trends and provides feedback regarding opportunities for growth and performance improvement.
  • Works collaboratively across organization – including system and regional leadership and medical staff – for coordination, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Continually assesses services provided for quality, cost effectiveness, customer service and engagement results.  Modifies service delivery for improvement and/or business development in order to achieve outcomes and goals for system-wide quality, service and financial viability.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Ten years' experience, with seven years' in leadership

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.

Senior Director of Health Information Management

Provides strategic direction and oversight for SSM Health Information Management (HIM) function – including hospital and professional staff (team size:  ~150).  Sets system standard for HIM record management policy and workflow, develops necessary technology and vendor solutions.  Implements HIM standards through all regional HIM functions.  Partners closely with SSM Health Compliance/Privacy to ensure health information management meets the requirements of state, federal, and professional regulations
