System engineer

Job Description Summary

The Systems Engineer will provide CDC Contract support on our Operations and Management Engineering team at the Infrastructure Branch (ISB).

Responsibilities will include providing System Engineering support for Shared Infrastructure :

Support / manage ISB’s storage systems including all SAN, vSAN, and NAS devices and switches as well as capacity management.

May require after hours support and will require after hours problem resolution.

Support / manage ISB’s onsite / offsite backup systems and restore needs, including virtual and physical tape loaders, media rotation, job scheduling and troubleshooting, and capacity management.

Perform restores as requested by an application owner within times specified in an application’s SLA in the event of data loss, if any, according to system service level category and agreements.

Develop custom SLA backup schedules and retention schedules for customers.

Audit the environment including all currently deployed servers and NAS infrastructure on a quarterly basis to ensure they are backed up.

Report on backup success rates and reruns of backup job failures; for backups requiring encryption, perform key escrow and tracking.

• Be responsible for deploying, patching, administering all aspects of performance, capacity, and security management of virtual environment hypervisors including


• VMware VSphere ESX and other hypervisor systems. Manage SDN networking as provided by each hypervisor publisher as well as automation and management tools as dictated by each environment.

Both Storage and Network virtualization environments as integrated or separate products will be supported. These may be part of the VMware VSphere product line or from other vendors as requirements dictate.

• Manage problem management function, including the ability to troubleshoot and resolve, along with other ISB personnel, events, incidents, and performance issues with ISB infrastructure, both hardware and software, and help with hosted system troubleshooting and performance evaluation.


• Maintain processes and documentation with the goal of continuous improvement of hosting solutions.


• Be responsible for identifying and mitigating risks in ISB’s environment, especially risks that could potentially impact availability of ISB-hosted applications and systems.


• Support Capacity management includes planning for the efficient use of existing IT resources and identifying any change in the type and quantity of IT resources necessary to fulfill ISB commitments.

IT resources for ISB include :

• Hardware (CPU, storage, memory, SAN, tape library, network / telecommunications within the ISB environment, peripherals, and any other needed hardware peripherals)


• Facilities (floor space, rack space, power, and any other facility needs); and


• Software, including license tracking for software used in ISB.


• Provide technical support for installation and troubleshooting ISB infrastructure hardware and operating systems. The SE shall :


• Conduct hardware installations, upgrades, and replacements.


• Keep all hardware and firmware at current revisions except where a deviation has been approved.


• Monitor server, storage, storage switch, production job, backup job, database reindexing job, and other ISB hosted asset and process health and performance.


• SIT Special Project : Manage certain special projects assigned to ISB, including infrastructure management of the Consolidated Statistical Platform (CSP) a server farm running SAS Institute’s statistical analysis software.

This includes providing technical support to the CDC internal and external statistical community thru the Statistical Software Help Desk (SSHD).

Work with CSP customers to define network shares in the CSP’s secured environment to store data that may contain Personal Identifiable Information (PII).

Education / Experience :

• Bachelor’s degree + 3 Years; would consider 5+ years of experience in lieu of degree


• VMware Certified Associate, VMware ESXi 5.1 or 6, PowerShell, VM Clustering

Required Skills

• NSX and VSAN experience, cloud, storage virtualization


• 3+ years of experience with ESX at version 6.0 or higher


• 3+ years of experience with VSAN implementation and management


• 1+ year experience with NSX V OR T

Other desired skills

• Strong customer service and communication skills


• Cloud awareness (intro level course from Azure or AWS or better)


• Automation skills - experience with Windows / Linux scripting (PowerShell / bash) or Jenkins


• One year or more of experience implementing and managing SRM

Additional Requirements :

• Ability to obtain and maintain Federal / CDC Public Trust - Moderate Risk security clearance

• Provide IT Operation maintenance support.



• Provide for desktop support and applications provisioning and support for client / project.


• Provide design documentation as it reflects implementation and troubleshooting guidelines for operation support to use for triage.


• Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Requirements :

• Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience.


• May have additional training or education in area of specialization.


• Develops solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity.

• Frequent use and general knowledge of industry practices, techniques, and standards.
