Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. We offer 8 applied bachelor's degrees, 43 associate degrees and 91 professional certificates in 42 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Lake Washington Technical Academy is a unique accredited technical high school that is embedded in the technical college, Lake Washington Institute of Technology. The faculty counselor for high school is an integral member of the high school programs team and helps to create a positive school culture for academic achievement, career and college readiness, and personal/social development. This position supports students in successfully achieving their educational goals through academic planning, career guidance, and overcoming personal barriers to success. The faculty counselor for high school collaborates with college faculty and staff on issues related to the success of high school students and also provides crisis intervention and short-term counseling services to students. This position reports to the dean of high school programs.
  • Advise case load of students toward achieving educational goals and obtaining a high school diploma
  • Provide culturally-competent career, educational, and short-term personal counseling
  • Identify individual learning needs of students and provide referral and/or assistance as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of state graduation requirements
  • Provide crisis intervention to individuals and/or groups of students
  • Develop and maintain community resources for student referral
  • Teach assigned courses such as college strategies or high school and beyond planning to support student success and meet state graduation requirements
  • Utilize data to identify, implement and evaluate student (individual or group) practices that might reduce impediments to student learning and enhance student success
  • Adhere to legal and ethical standards and principles of the school counseling profession and educational systems, follow departmental, college and state policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with stakeholders such as parents and guardians, teachers, administrators and community leaders to create learning opportunities that promote educational equity and success
  • Represent and advocate for Lake Washington Technical Academy and its students on college committees and in the larger K12 community
  • Support the high school mission with advocacy, leadership, and collaboration and utilize high school accreditation standards to contribute to continuous school improvement efforts
  • Consistently utilize a collaborative approach to work with others, solve problems and resolve conflict
  • Participate in self-improvement and professional development activities in field of expertise and demonstrate current knowledge and skills
  • Develop strategies and increase awareness to foster and support cultural diversity and nondiscrimination
  • Possess disposition, knowledge, skills and interest in working with high school age students
  • Master's degree with academic preparation appropriate to a counseling assignment
  • High School counselor ESA certification or ability to attain certification within six months of hire
  • Demonstrated ability in individual and group counseling
  • Demonstrated skill and experience working with multiethnic and multicultural populations
  • Two years experience working with high school age populations
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledge of MS Office in an IBM environment preferred

Compensation & Work Schedule 
Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. Salary is negotiable depending upon qualifications; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Working hours are usually Monday through Friday between 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, with some evening advising and other flexible hours as needed. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment. This is a full-time, Annual Renewable position.

Medical, dental, and insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; State Retirement Plan; sick leave is equal to 1 day per month, effective upon employment.
