  • Job SummaryThis position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. Alumni A airs and Development (AA&D) comprises the University Development O ce (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA).
  • There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising.
  • Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) DevelopmentFAS Development is responsible for the fundraising e orts supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including Harvard College, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • FAS Development sta work with Harvard College donors, alumni, parents, and friends who provide critical support for the FAS and often for other parts of the University.
  • Summary: The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing and managing a cohort of FAS Development Support Staff (grades 53 and 54).
  • This position ensures the frontline officers have the highest level of support while also providing an equitable and uniformly positive working experience in FAS Development for assistants.
  • Reporting to the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning, the Assistant Director works with the Associate Director to create a cohesive management structure for all frontline development assistants.
  • This includes goal setting and performance management, workflow management, learning and development, interim and permanent coverage assignments and hiring and onboarding, amongst other tasks.

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of a cohort of development assistants including recruitment and hiring, onboarding, schedule and absence approval and identifying tools and resources for the development assistants to be successful.
  • Oversees the full-year performance management process for a cohort of development assistants, in consultation with the appropriate frontline officers and the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning.
  • Conducts check-in meetings with each development assistant within the cohort where topics such as workload, position satisfaction, performance, feedback and questions are discussed.
  • Meets periodically with frontline officers and management team of cohort to discuss performance and support needs of the assigned development assistant cohort.
  • Oversees the long term and interim support staff assignments as it relates to the assigned development assistant cohort.
  • Work with Human Resources in collaboration with the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning on performance concerns, employee relations issues, compensation, policy translation and compliance.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning on the partnership of both FAS Group Leader cohorts (Harvard College Fund and Donor Development & Services) to create a streamlined approach to Group Leader management and engagement.
  • Works closely with the development assistants, frontline officers, Talent Management, and the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning to identify training needs, skills enhancement, and professional growth opportunities for the assigned development assistant cohort.
  • Develops onboarding and training plans to ensure that each development assistant has the skills needed to ensure job success and to promote professional development.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director of Development, Resources and Planning to schedule guest speakers and relevant presentations for the monthly development assistant cohort meetings for all frontline development assistants.
  • Assigns projects to support staff cohort on an as needed basis.
  • May have opportunity to manage more development assistants based on structural needs.
  • Additional Qualifications and SkillsAbility to work effectively and sensitively with staff during periods of significant change using creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of office management and computerized office procedures; demonstrated negotiating skills; ability to work effectively and with tact and discretion across the organization; ability to handle sensitive/confidential situations diplomatically; experience working successfully in an ambiguous environment; proven ability to take initiative and to work collaboratively with a variety of people and departments.
  • Previous experience managing is encouraged but not required.
  • Additional InformationThis position requires a 3 month orientation and review period.
