General Summary/ Overview Statement

The Multi-Regional Clinical Trials (MRCT) Center is an applied research and policy center focused on improving the design, conduct, and oversight of multi-regional clinical trials, with a particular focus to trials sited in or involving the developing world. Our efforts have resulted in the implementation of improved clinical research practices, greater transparency, and improved safety for research participants. We function as an independent convening group to identify and bring together collaborative, multidisciplinary teams of expert stakeholders from industry, academia, advocacy groups, nonprofit organizations, and regulatory agencies to address critical issues in the conduct and oversight of clinical trials. The MRCT Center has a number of ongoing Programs that address current issues in global clinical trials including but not limited to: Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Clinical Research; Health Literacy in Clinical Research; Promoting Global Clinical Research in Children; Data Transparency; and Capacity Building of global regulators, ethics committees, and study teams.

The MRCT Center resides within the Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE). The Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE) fosters the support and coordination of training, research, and service to reduce disparities in disease burden and to improve treatment outcomes both at home and abroad. The Division focuses on infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis) as well as non-infectious diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, diabetes, addiction) and other health problems that disproportionately affect populations in the developing world and of major importance to society. The DGHE is the academic and administrative home of the MRCT Center.

One of the MRCT Center s core strengths is training and capacity building, both domestically and globally. The MRCT Center is a Training Associate of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) and designated as an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Training Center of Excellence. Our training areas include ethical principles of research, clinical research design and development, good clinical practices, multi-regional clinical trials, data safety monitoring board management, health literacy, diverse inclusion of study populations, participant understanding, and issues in research bioethics.
