Job Summary



Dominion Energy is seeking an Engineer III to be a part of the Electric Transmission System Operations Engineering team. The candidate will be part of a team that supports operators and engineers in the Electric Transmission System Operations Center.




The System Operations Engineering team is responsible for maintaining the Energy Management System model of the electrical transmission network, as well as displays and applications used by system operators. This role focuses on developing and maintaining various tools used by system modelers with the aim of increasing productivity and decreasing modeling errors. In addition, it also supports advanced EMS applications like synchrophasor-based situational awareness.




Candidates should have a strong electrical engineering background and possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices, preferably in electric power systems and software development.





Job activities may include:


  • Perform and/or support the modeling of Dominion s Transmission system such as SCADA modeling and configurations, network topology, equipment ratings and parameter impedances as well as the maintenance of various displays.

  • Developing and/or supporting the development of client-side applications used by members of the modeling team to automate and enhance processes or improve situational awareness in the operations control room.

  • Support debugging, testing, and validating developed applications.

  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to various engineering, operations and field teams and PJM to fully maintain the EMS model

  • Writing scripts or tools to automate various tasks and processes.

  • Maintaining/configuring servers used for synchrophasor-based situational awareness applications.

  • Training users on new EMS applications and seeking feedback to drive continual improvement.

  • Assisting with quality assurance testing of major EMS IT projects.

  • Conducting research, development, and demonstration of leading-edge tools, technologies, and applications to maintain Dominion's leadership position in the industry.

  • Participate in various company teams, industry-level organizations, university partnerships, ISOs/RTOs, and national research labs to enhance Electric Transmission s system operations performance.

  • Perform other duties, as requested or assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience



The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:





5+ years relevant engineering experience working in the electric utility industry or related industry (in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection, Distribution Planning, or Transmission Planning, or related experience)



or



5+ years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program on its own or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry.




  • Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications. An advanced degree (Master s or Doctorate) counts towards related experience



Required:

  • Candidate should have a strong electrical engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
  • Understanding of AC/DC circuit analysis fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
  • Knowledge of and development experience with programming languages, tools, and frameworks for automation and analysis, such as Python, Perl, C#, VBA, SQL, etc.
  • Familiarity with the Git version control system.
  • Proficiency in working with both relational and hierarchical databases.
  • Working knowledge of phasor measurement units and related protocols (e.g., IEEE C37.118, STTP, etc.).
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Must be able to meet NERC certifications.



Preferred:

  • Experience with Energy Management Systems such as GE/Alstom s e-terra platform is preferred.
  • Basic proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, vector graphics, and SVG files.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint workflow development, particularly with Nintex Forms.

Education Requirements



Required: Degree in Engineering (see below Engineering criteria) *We are considering upcoming graduates who will have a degree no later than December 31st, 2022.

Preferred advanced degrees:

  • Doctorate in electrical engineering
  • Master s in electrical engineering



Disciplines: Electrical Engineering with a consideration to Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science/Engineering degrees if there has been a sufficient work history in the power systems industry.



REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:



For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
