Technical Specialist in Energy Efficiency

Who we are: Calit2 is an interdisciplinary institute at the University of California, Irvine that promotes research and develops technology for areas such as flexible load energy efficiency and management, biomedical, communication and networking technologies. The California Plug Load Research Center (CalPlug) is an interdisciplinary research unit within Calit2 that focuses on energy efficiency and related issues for plug load devices (that is, anything you plug into an electric socket, from computers and home appliances to lab equipment and electric vehicles). Our projects include assessing technology trends, developing prototypes, lab testing devices, modeling energy usage to inform codes and standards, conducting field tests, surveys, and other research on user behavior, and assessing and improving utility incentive programs.

Who we want: We are seeking a specialist to lead technical projects at Calit2 and CalPlug. The responsibilities include assisting the Calit2 director in overseeing technical strategies, implementation, and applications in Calit2 labs and related projects; working closely with the CalPlug Research Director on developing and managing CalPlug research, testing, and assessment projects; writing reports and publications and presenting results at conferences; and collaborating with Calit2 staff in coordinating technical content for center demos and workshops. The individual will be technical lead on major research and testing grants. The position involves supervising and training staff teams and mentoring undergraduate student projects.

Required:

· Applications are being sought from degreed candidates in physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science engineering or biomedical engineering. Completion of PhD degree in related area and/or equivalent experience preferred.

· Established technical skills, e.g., electronics design and troubleshooting, circuit level design, UI design, general and microcontroller programming skills, statistics, tool development and use, and/or energy model simulations

· Background of independent project leadership

· Demonstrated communications skills and writing skills, especially technical reports, and a strong publication record

Desired:

· Experience working in interdisciplinary teams including social scientists, engineers, and physical scientists

· Experience with and/or enthusiasm for energy efficiency and sustainability issues

· Experience developing proposals and managing research grants, experimental projects, and/or service contracts

· Hands-on experience working with electronics and other plug load devices, and with energy testing protocols and measures

· Track record of student mentorship

Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is based on performance and availability of support. The University offers an excellent benefits package, including health and dental insurance, vacation time, sick time, and retirement. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position will remain open until filled.
