WORK LOCATION
This position will be located in either Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta), however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis. This position will require a mix of both field and office work. Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home).
POSITION SUMMARY
A Transmission Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design activities for large capital electric utility transmission projects in southeast Georgia. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, engineering budgets, engineering schedules, and serves as a consistent point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager.
The Transmission Project Engineer works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipates changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and develops/communicates mitigation plans for those changes. They also identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor related issues. This position is required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications
This position will be filled at a Level 6 or 7, based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
Travel:
Up to 25% travel should be expected within the Southern Company footprint
Travel frequency will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported
Relocation:
- Some relocation assistance may be available for this position if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Atlanta or Birmingham area
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required, Electrical Engineering is preferred
Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus
Technical & Leadership Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience working in (or in direct support of) electric utility distribution and/or transmission systems is required
Minimum 5 years of cumulative experience in the following areas is strongly preferred:
Design as related to electric utility distribution and/or transmission systems
Project Engineer and/or Project Management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for electric utility distribution and/or transmission systems
Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e., directing activities of direct reports or project team members) is required
Budget and schedule management
Understanding of project change control
Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.
Must possess strong management and organization skills.
Ability to build a strong, diverse team.
The incumbent must possess the skills to balance customer satisfaction priorities with those deriving from project restraints.
Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
