Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of the Office of Financial Aid is to administer all financial aid programs of the University including grants, scholarships, loans, and federal work study. The office received and processed applications from approximately 25,000 students each year and over $250 million in student aid funds.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director is to support the Associate Director for Customer Service. This position will provide counseling to students and families regarding financial aid. This includes providing information and advice on various federal, state and institutional aid programs. This position helps students navigate the financial aid process.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director provides top level customer service, advice, and counseling to students and families as they make decisions about college planning and financing. The Assistant Director is responsible for counseling students and families both in person, on the phone and by email communications. This position will also be responsible for determining eligibility from various types of institutional, state and federal financial aid programs. An alphabetical section is assigned to the Assistant Director for the purpose of advising, professional judgment decisions, determining award packages and award revisions. Expected to exercise discretion and independent judgment in carrying out job responsibilities. Attention to detail and accountable for meeting deadlines. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for representing the office at financial aid presentations which include high school nights, financial aid panel discussions, open house events, etc.

Minimum Education/Experience
- Masters degree required, or Bachelor’s with equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years of progressive financial aid experience at a four year institution.
- Experience at an assistant director level is beneficial.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Master’s degree preferred.
Preferred skills include:
- Considerable knowledge of automated systems, both mainframe and PC based. Ellucian Banner experience highly preferred.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial aid databases (e.g. CPS , NSLDS , COD )
- Thorough understanding of need analysis, student budgets, and federal/state/private aid management is necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to manage confidential information pertaining to financial aid application review with discretion.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and a high comfort level with public speaking before large groups is required, and an ability to effectively engage audiences through dynamic oral presentations is essential.
- Demonstrated commitment to working within a diverse environment and interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors from different backgrounds on a daily basis.
- Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations governing state and federal student aid programs.
- Sound leadership, analytical and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to express position and procedures clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting policies, procedures and regulations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, campus departments, outside agencies and students/families.
