Position Summary

The Communications Manager is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of internal and external communication needs for multiple units within the Provost Office. This individual will work with the team on ongoing communication campaigns and projects. This position will primarily be focused on executing internal engagement strategies for our audiences, developing/writing/editing content for distribution through a variety of communication channels, drafting social media materials, updating websites via a content management system, and supporting the team to develop strategic communication plans. The Communications Manager will coordinate creative and production processes in collaboration with Provost Office team members to help conceptualize, create, and manage projects.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with team members to plan internal strategic communication strategies and tactics related to key initiatives and priorities.

  • Develops content in the form of press releases, one sheeters, fact sheets, emails and digital newsletters.

  • Develops concepts, provides design direction, and manages production for unit specific projects such as newsletters, social media campaigns, unit websites, and more.

  • Engages in strategic storytelling through feature writing and article development.

  • Drafts social media content and engages with social audiences.

  • Keeps a pulse on trending news (internally and externally) in order to identify communication needs and publicity opportunities.

  • Reviews digital analytics for various communication channels and provides recommendations and adjustments to optimize results.

  • Supports the team in goal setting, execution, tracking, and reporting per project, campaign, unit, etc.

  • Designs, creates, edits, and adapts content for multiple communications, including newsletters, blogs, websites, social media, print assets, emails, blogs and articles.

  • Helps capture assets and generate buzz for special events and activities for key audiences.

  • Identifies information sources and conducts interviews to obtain information.

  • Coordinates possible multimedia components for integrated communication efforts.

  • Communication/Interpersonal Relationships

  • Provost Office communications team – This position is part of a cross-functional team of marketing and communications professionals serving multiple units within the Office of the Provost.

  • Campus communicators – to acquire, develop and edit content from university unit-level communications, including print, newsletters, and websites.

  • University Communications – to build relationships, collaborate on stories and/or suggest news and feature stories for further promotion.

  • Student employees and partners – to provide them with direction and oversee work.

  • Outside vendors — to edit digital and print ads to meet MSU standards.

  • Supervisor — in order to seek advice and approval and receive direction.

  • Responsibility for the Work of Others

    May provide first level supervision over student employees.

    Work Environment

    Negligible disagreeable working conditions. The job requires moderate physical effort and involves viewing a VDT screen, sitting in place 26-75% of the time.

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications

    The job requires:

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in journalism, English, communications, or a related field.

  • Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in marketing communications management.

  • Demonstrated experience and excellence in writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, especially related to marketing communications.

  • Knowledge of design and printing techniques; word processing, desktop publishing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software; may require experience with content management systems for website design, maintenance, and communication.

  • Effective organizational, time management, and project management skills.

  • Application and demonstration of strong editorial judgment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals and groups in diverse settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and meet multiple deadlines.

  • Proficiency in editing in AP style.

  • Proficiency with standard industry software, such as Microsoft Word.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Additional Requirements

    • May require a valid operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
