Blue Origin
Seattle, WA
FULL_TIME, PART_TIME

We are a diverse team of collaborators and problem solvers who are relentlessly committed to fostering inclusion, innovation, and safety. Through your attention to detail and dedication, this position will help us build a road to space to expand, explore, and enable the movement of damaging industries into space to preserve Earth, humanity's blue origin. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth!

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will join fellow design engineers in the development of liquid rocket engine assemblies and coordinated component systems for spaceflight systems. You will be responsible for complete product lifecycle from initial requirements through flight qualification including design, manufacturing, test support, performing test data reviews, processing non-conforming hardware and writing technical reports. You will deliver technically mature, high performing and well understood mechanical design solutions at the Engine System level. You will use your technical judgement to select methods and techniques best suited for the solution, optimally balancing risk and technical design. Your team will devise and integrate improvements into the rocket engine assembly as a result of qualification efforts, quality improvements, design improvements, and cost reductions. Your team will also incorporate learning from build at multiple Blue Origin manufacturing facilities by performing root cause analyses and leading corrective actions for non-conformances and escapes, leading to the deployment of recovery strategies. Your overarching goal will be to evolve the design process by taking ownership of product quality and establishing processes and procedures to support continuous improvement. You will detail these improvements within the CAD model and release using appropriate configuration management processes. Some detailed component systems you could design include heat exchangers, pogo suppression systems, flexible elements, insulation, gimbal joints, primary and secondary structure, high pressure cryogenic fluid systems, pressurization systems, and hydraulic systems. You will lead, mentor, and train other engineers on techniques, procedures and criteria required for their job assignment. To be successful in this position, good attention to detail is a must, be able to balance multiple technical issues, and demonstrate knowledge of engineering release / configuration management, and fundamentals of mechanical engineering design using aerospace materials and advanced manufacturing processes. In this role you will partner with our entire team, not just fellow design engineers, but manufacturing engineers, quality engineers and technicians in developing and manufacturing flight rocket engine assemblies supporting all Blue Origin programs.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering field (aerospace, mechanical, chemical or physics desired)
  • 20+ years of industry experience in a related field
  • 15+ years proven experience with design, qualification, component fabrication, assembly or testing on spacecraft, launch vehicles or rocket propulsion systems
  • Proficiency in CAD and large assembly model management and configuration
  • Knowledgeable with GD&T implementation and analysis (ASME Y14.5)
  • Knowledge of aerospace materials, treatments and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately at all levels of the organization
  • Strong intuition and judgment when faced with ambiguity and the need to make high velocity decisions
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired:
  • Proficiency in Creo Parametric and Windchill PLM
  • Proven experience leading team members and indirect/matrixed program team members
  • Experience in packaging of mechanical components into a large assembly
  • Experience in working resolution of production nonconformance
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids and oxygen compatibility

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Estimated hourly wage (Colorado only): $187K-$312K
