Purpose of Job USAA is currently seeking a dedicated Commercial Insurance Underwriting Manager to lead a team of Small Business Insurance Underwriters. The candidate who accepts this role will be responsible for leading a team of commercial underwriters who work with our internal & external partners to ensure our underwriting appetite is being applied as designed & intended. In addition to leading underwriting decisions, the candidate who accepts this role will be responsible for establishing & holding the team to performance metrics that are currently in development.

Lead and manage teams to deliver commercial underwriting results in line with overall underwriting strategy. Drives execution of underwriting programs and processes, change management, and policies and procedures across multiple teams. Facilitates consistency and integration of operational service delivery with respect to underwriting across commercial insurance. Evaluates underwriting results and recommends changes to improve operating effectiveness and underwriting performance. Serves as a focal point for integration of Underwriting and Pricing initiatives impacting Underwriting. Job Requirements

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

  • Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.

  • Develops, implements, and leads underwriting strategy through their team and monitor performance pursuant to underwriting guidelines and processes

  • Develops, implements, and monitors underwriting programs, processes, systems, and performance standards, to include timeliness, quality and/or productivity

  • Directs the identification, analysis, development, and implementation of initiatives that improve operational efficiency while maintaining underwriting compliance

  • Integrates area functions with other internal departments and/or external agencies, including regulators, vendors, and alliance partners

  • Evaluates underwriting results, audits, and feedback, and directs analyses and studies on markets, resources, and processes to identify, recommend and manage the implementation of underwriting action plans

  • Coordinates underwriting programs, policies, practices and procedures with Commercial Insurance and P&C Underwriting and Pricing

  • Manages the implementation of countrywide operational projects affecting the entire P&C underwriting community

  • Builds and oversees a team of underwriters for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree. (Total of 10 years without Bachelor's degree required)

Minimum Experience:

  • 6 years in commercial insurance underwriting, or as a producer or agent of commercial insurance.

  • 2 years of direct team lead, supervisory, or management experience.

  • Experience executing and/or defining underwriting processes, procedures, and/or guidelines.

  • Experience applying & editing policy forms, notices, & procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge of relevant industry practices, trends, and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience in making data driven decisions to create actionable recommendations for performance improvement.

  • Experience in presenting analysis and findings to varying levels of management and business stakeholders to gain support for recommendations and influence initiatives.

  • Experience monitoring, analyzing, and implementing change to workflow management.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

Preferred Experience:

  • US military service or a military spouse

  • Experience leading teams in metrics based working environments

  • Experience either establishing new or challenging existing metrics

  • Experience leading teams through change management initiatives

  • Experience leading teams with varying levels of technical experience & acumen

Compensation:

USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $80,200 - 144,500.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

.Geographical Differential : Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.

Shift premium will be addressed on an individual basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
